DRIVER’S LICENSES READY APRIL 15
LOCAL AUTO LICENSE BUREAU RECEIVES INSTRUCTIONS Clarence Russell in charge of the local auto license bureau said on Tuesday that the new auto driver’s licenses would probably not be ready for delivery before April 15th. The new driver’s license law makes April 1st, the dead line in which to procure new driving permits, but owing to the great amount of labor entailed in printing and distributing over a million and half licenses together with the necessary applications for the same it was impossible to get them ready by the earlier date. The new law provides that the annual driver’s license shall be fifty cents, which is an increase of twenty-five cents over the previous cost, with the addition that new licenses will have to be procured every year while under the old system a license was good until revoked. All applications for driver’s licenses must be accompanied with the applicant’s last poll tax receipt and no stamps or personal checks will be accepted for the fee. In filling out an aplication for a license, if any of the answers as shown on the face of the application is “yes” the applicant will be required to take an examination, before the license is issued. Applications and payments for the new license will not be accepted until April 15th, unless the applicant is without a driver’s license, in which event, his or her application will be accepted and a receipt will be issued by the authorized license branch. The new license will then be delivered or mailed, at a later date. No receipts will be honored, unless they are the official license branch receipts. Section 22 of the Uniform Operator’s and Chauffeur’s License Act also states that “Any person who shall knowingly make any falsie affidavit, or shall knowingly swear or affirm falsely, to any matter or thing required by the terms of this act to be sworn to or affirmed, shall be guilty of perjury and upon conviction shall be punishable by fine or imprisonment as provided by law’ The Uniform Operator’s and Chauffeurs License Act further provides that every person who operates a motor vehicle upon the streets or highways of the State of Indiana must have either an operator’s license or a chauffeur’s license. The law further states that the licensee shall have such license in his immediate possession at all times when driving a motor vehicle and shall display the same upon demand of any court or any police officer as authorized by law to enforce motor vehicle regulations.
