Work on the milk and cheese plant is progressing rapidly. The building is being extended 30 feet toward the road which will give room on the ground floor for the cheese press and create a new store room. It will also save the labor of one man when completed. Some hot times have been had in the river timber north of town in the last few days. Several gangs have been taking white oak timber to be used for posts in grape arbors near Lake Michigan. Ray Van Meerten and Mrs. E. H. Merritt and little daughter Evlyn attended the show at Lowell last Saturday night. The boys who had the bad wreck in the fog some time ago north of DeMotte called on Fred McGlinn this week. These are the boys he took to the hospital. They have several bad looking scars from their numerous cuts. They are getting evidence against the truck drivers who were parked in the road causing the collision. Harold Sigler is putting on a chicken feeding demonstration at the Huizinga chicken farm north of DeMotte. Marion Carter’s house burned down on the insurance company’s farm north of town Thursday night causing Marion a heavy loss as the contents were only partially covered by insurance. The fire started in the basement. The company have promised him a new house at once.
Mrs. E. H. Merritt is on the sick list this week. John Kooy is selling a good many maple trees from his nursery north of DeMotte. Eric’s are building a large chicken house on their vegetable farm. It has been reported that a stork was hovering over Groet’s house Friday, March 3rd at three o’clock in the afternoon and left a great big nine pound baby calf to the cow at the west end of the barn. Casey Granger is looking for a barber chair shop to be run in connection with butcher shop. Mrs. Neil Sekema entertained her Bunco club last Friday evening. First prize was awarded to Mrs. terton, third to Mrs. Ethel Wiersma Sekema, second to Mrs. Harry Betand consolation to Mrs. H. Osting. Mrs. Von Phelps and Mrs. Rapp entertained their Bridge club last Thursday evening at the home of the former. First prize was awarded to Mrs. Lorenz Bauman, second to Mrs. Harry Rathburn and consolation to Mrs. Fred Cheever. Guests included Mrs. Fred Cheever, Mrs. Elbert Cheever of DeMotte and Miss Illiff of Kersey.
Mr. and Mrs. Otto Newman of Stillwell and Miss Eva Thompson of LaPorte were guests of Editor and Mrs. Cox, Sunday. Miss Burdell Murry, who has been attending school at Charleston, Ill. arrived here Friday to spend a few months with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Murry. Mrs. Millard Hart, Mrs. Sam McGinnis Mrs. J. Spencer, Mrs. A. B. Dobbins, Miss Helen Curtin, Mrs. Erwin attended the funeral of Ruby Ann Yeagley in Crown Point last Thursday. Pall bearers were from here, Millard Hart, Wm. White, Albert Cheever, Emmett Erwin, Merl Curtin and Gerald Curtin. Trucks belonging to Sam Hamstra now go under the name of Kankakee Valley Express. Rumor has it that offices have been moved to Winamac. D. F. Potter, of DeMotte, is a new subscriber to the Kankakee Valley Post. Who will be next? A number of DeMotte people attended the community meeting at Kniman Monday evening. Miss Charity Erwin of Chicago visited her mother Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. May entertained the principals and their wives of Jasper County Monday evening. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Malin Gravenstock at the Rensselaer hospital Saturday. SCHOOL NEWS The Principals held their meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. May Monday evening. The County Superintendent was also present. The Seniors of DeMotte High School wish to thank the patrons of the community for their help in
our pastry sale Saturday. The Junior play will be given this Friday evening at 8 o’clock. Come help them. The Typing class is improving and are making some very fine booklets. Quite a few of the school children attended the Community meeting at Kniman Tuesday evening. They were entertained by the Birkey Bros. The high school report cards were handed out Wednesday evening. Three of the Cunningham ren withdrew from our school and moved to Shelby. Mrs. Bauman and Miss Kennedy went to the tournament Friday afternoon. Ida Ausema and Emma Dykema taught school for Mrs. Bauman, Friday afternoon. Amy Grunwald taught for Miss Kennedy Friday. Lloyd Cunningham withdrew from room 2 and moved to Shelby. Some new pencil sharpeners have been installed in the assembly. Amy Grunwald was escorted to the community meeting at Kniman Tuesday evening by guess who?? Dale T. Hunter. It is reported that Martha DeVis wore a wedding veil. The eighth grade will have a class party next Saturday night here at the school. Some new rules have been made in the Home Economics class. Wonder why? Mr. and Mrs. May attended the sectional tourney Friday evening and Saturday. The Ewarts and Mays had a Bridge session Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. May entertained the Principals of the County and their wives Monday evening, as it was the regular meeting night. County Superintendent and Mrs. Sterrett were present and Mr. Sterrett gave a review of what the legislature has done for the schools. After the business, refreshments were served.
