DeMOTTE WINS COUNTY TOURNEY

The DeMotte Independent basketball team proved its superiority last week end by winning the Jasper county Independent basketball tournament which was held at Rensselaer Friday and Saturday. The Rensselaer Republican in a creditable write-up of the final game Saturday night has the following to say: Led by the long-limbed Bud Bol, DeMotte won the county independent basketball championship at the Armory Saturday night, defeating the leg-weary Red Devils by a score of 37 to 28. It was the second county title to go north this year, Wheatfield having ascended to the championship chair in high school circles one week ago. There was nothing flukey about the DeMotte triumph, for they clearly outplayed the locals in the championship game, after trailing at the half 16-17. The Devils were all in from their hard fought game in the morning when they defeated the Rensselaer Orioles 35 to 26. They slowed down to a walk in the final half against DeMotte. Once Rensselaer started weakening DeMotte turned on the power and quickly raced to a safe lead. The Red Devils showed surprising strength to reach the final contest and they proved their right to the runner-up honors. It was a case of the two best teams reaching the final game, something that does not often happen in tournaments. DeMotte went into an 11 to 1 lead early in the first half, but a switch, in the Rensselaer lineup not only permitted the locals to cut the lead but to wipe it out entirely and go to the front as the half ended, 1716. DeMotte was not long in taking the lead after the second half started. Rensselaer scored a fielder and then DeMotte began the drive that carried them to the front. The Bol brothers and Phelps whipped in several fielders at one time had a lead of 34 to 22. As the game neared the close DeMotte let up a trifle and Rensselaer was able to cut the margin to some extent. DeMotte’s team is the class of basket ball five of the county and is to be congratulated. The tournament was conducted by Milton Craw and the attendance was quite good. It will be an annual affair. The officiating was handled in very capable manner by the Etter boys of Oxford.
