WHEATFIELD WINS COUNTY TOURNEY
In one of the most thrilling final games ever staged in a Jasper county tournament Wheatfield defeated Remington Saturday night to win the Jasper county tournament by a one point margin, 26 to 25. Thus the county championship which rested in the trophy case of Rensselaer high school, moved to the north end of the county for the first time in many years. The victory was a most popular one in view of the fact that Rensselaer and Remington have won the tournament as far back as we can remember. Also in the fact that Wheatfield played a brilliant brand of basketball all through the tournament. Most of Coach Anderson’s players are seniors, who have battled valiantly for the crown in past years and deserve recompense in the honor of the county’s basketball classic. Wheatfield went to the finals by defeating Fair Oaks and Hanging Grove, Remington stood up to the finals by trouncing DeMotte and the Rensselaer second team. The latter drew a bye in the first round. Wheatfield had the edge over Remington in the finals in reach, the north end boys towering over Coach Telle’s players from the south by several inches per man. However, the Carpenter township lads made up for the handicap in speed. It was a hectic game all tnrough the four quarters, with Remington leading in the first quarter by a score of 11 to 7. Wheatfield drew up on the leaders in the middle of the second quarter and then passed their adversaries leading at the half time intermission by a score of 15 to 13. There was only one point difference at the close of the third quar- ter Wheatfield stretched their lead to five points. In the meantime Coach Anderson had replaced J. Jeffers with Hillard, a promising sophomore, who is a ball handler deluxe. Young Hillard, a cool headed lad, held the ball while the seconds were ticking away. However, Merritt and Barker sank two buckets in the waning few minutes to bring Remington within one point of the leaders, but the final gun fired with Wheatfield winning the game 26 to 25.
