At the present time everybody is asking about the school situation in Jasper county for the coming year. The Legislature will soon wrestle wth the problem with a hope of maintaining the schools up to the present standards. Townships cannot continue to finance the schools as in years past. If the schools are to continue functioning as heretofore then new sources of financial support is absolutely necessary. A sales tax, an. income tax, a tax on ^intangible securities, are a few of the new sources now being considered. In column No. 4 above one will note approximately the amount of money that will come to each township in Jasper county provided the proposed bill now in the process of the making becomes a law. The finance must come from the State and is disbursed by giving to each grade teacher unit SBOO and to each high school unit SIOO for salary purposes only. And practically every corporation in Jasper county (all except . Kankakee, Union, Walker, and Wheatfield | could operate up to present stand- ' ards and do so by remaining within the $1.50 rate. The school forces in Indiana are sponsoring nonproperty taxes —sales, intangible, income etc. etc. Tangible personal property and real estate will support schools provided it does not exceet the $1.50 rate. The above data has been compiled from the auditors office after much care. The deductions may not} be sbsolutely accurate; yet if the people of Jasperrcounty will be stimulated to question the accuracy then the thinking necessary to do so will be helpful. We most all cooperate by thinking so that we can soon start upwards rather than downwards with our schools. Many of Jasper County’s schools will riot open next fall, unless the Legislature devises some different means of financial support. This plan represents the latest line of procedure that will be offered to the Legislature next week or soon thereafter. i
