N. Y. C. PURCHASES C. A. & S. RAILROAD
The New York Central has purchased the Chicago, Attica & Southern and will operate this line as a branch feeder for their line which connects with the C. A. & S. at Wheatfield. This road (C. A. & S.) will be remembered by older residents as the Chicago & Eastern Illinois, at one time Indiana’s leading coal road. Several years ago this line was divided and sold. The Baltimore & Ohio now operates a section extending from Brazil to West Melcher. The Chicago, Attica & Southern starts at West Melcher and extends north to LaCrosse, passing through eight northern Indiana counties. It has been years since they operated passenger trains, the bulk of their business consisting of grain and live stock. In addition to operating freight trains over their own tracks they use the P. M. tracks from LaCrosse to Wellsboro, Ind. The value and selling price of the C. A. & S. was set at $165,000 and is still greatly needed by the communities they now serve. It is expected that the new owners will completely rebuild the entire road and operate trains on a more definite schedule. It is hoped that the road will now receive the attention that it was long needed.
