OF INTEREST TO JASPER AND NEWTON VOTERS.
We are herewith quoting a letter received from Wm. C. Babcock, Jr., republican candidate for re-election for State Representative of Newton and Jasper counties, of which should be of vital importance to voters Nov. 8. “Rensselaer, Ind., Oct. 18, 1932 (to) Editor, Kankakee Valley Post, DeMotte, Ind. In order that the Legislature may pass an income tax law at the session next January, the income tax amendment must first be ratified at the election next November 8, on the special income tax ballot provided at that election. In order for the election to carry, there must be a majority in favor of the income tax amendment to the State Constitution of all ballots cast, and not a majority of votes cast on the amendment, alone. I believe it is the sentiment of practically all the voters of Jasper and Newton counties, that instead of having a loss, that if they should have an income they would be willing to pay a small income tax to the state, which tax should reduce the present tax on real estate. I have always voted in favor of an income tax; but the leading lawyers of our state advise that the constitutional amendment must first be passed at the general election. I believe that you should call this matter to the attention of your readers. Yours very truly, (Signed) Wm. C. Babcock, Jr., State Representative for Jasper and Newton Counties.
