Democratic spokesmen, from the heads of the ticket down, continue to repeat the stale untruth that the Haw-ley-Smoot law is the highest tariff law ever enacted in the history of the country. The Tariff Commission, made up of three Republicans and three Democrats, has officially declared that four preceding tariff laws were higher than this one, one of them being the Mills bill, a Democratic measure. What confidence can be put in the arguments of political leaders who persist in repeating statements they must know to be false?
