SHELBY (VIRGINIA DICKEY)

School registration for the Shelby Grade School will be Saturday, Sept. 3rd, and the following Tuesday, Sept. 6, school opens for the term. Teachers for the year are Mr. Thomas Miller of southern Indiana, Miss Ruth Holton of Shelby, Miss Bonnie Jones of Monon and Miss Mary Holton of Shelby. Paul Nave of Gary is spending the week with his grandmother, Mrs. Eva Latta. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Uhter and family in company with friends enjoyed a picnic at Michigan City, last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Karl Runyon and children attended the Jasper County Fair last Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Mauck spent Sunday with Mr. Mauck's mother in Rensselaer. Miss Nelda Struble of Gary has been in Shelby the past week visiting her Uncle and Aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Davis. Miss Delia Fuller is back in Shelby again, visiting her brother Ed. Fuller and family. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Stowell are the parents of a new son, born Wednesday, August 24th. Miss Jeanette DeVries, who is working in Fair Oaks, was home over Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Meyers and twin sons, of Champaign, Illinois, who have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Hathaway, returned home Tuesday. Miss Ruth Meyers, who has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. Hathaway for the past month, also returned home with her parents. Earl Sirois caught a ten pound pickerel, thirty six inches long, (my, my) in the Kadkakee River last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Silas Latta and neice Wava Jean Doty were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Day Mrs. John Flatt entertained a number of little friends to her son Gene last Thursday at a party honoring his seventh birthday. Dainty refreshments of ice cream and cake were served. Mrs. Anna Larson is visiting her son, Ed. Larson, and daughter, Mrs. Ben Ericson, in Niles, Mich., this week. Mr. and Mrs. Otis Childers kindly offered the use of the grove east of their home to the young people of the Tuesday Evening Bible Club for a party last Thursday evening. An enoyable evening was passed playing games and roasting weiners. Mrs. P. F. Naylor entertained her Five Hundred Club at her home last Thursday. High scores went to Mrs. Charles Eich, Mrs. Glen Maock and Mrs. Earl Pace. A number of our citizens are attending the Lake County Fair at Crown Point this week. Miss Rosetta Sheffer invited in several neighbors and friends in community Friday evening to help celebrate her mothers birthday, which was August 26th. Mrs. Joe Gilmore and family who have been at their summer cottage here for the past month returned to their home in Chicago Sunday. Mrs. John Caster visited her daughter, Miss Hannah Caster, who is ill in Mercy Hospital in Gary last week. Mrs. Fred Fisher of Chicago who is spending the summer at her cottage here, was called into the city Saturday because of the death of her eleven month old nephew.
