The test of worth la not the hold you !iaveof earth; Lo, there be ccntlest souls, sea blown. That know not any harbor known; And It may be the reaaon Im They touch oa fairer Iiores than this. Joaquin Miller. t Salads New and Old.

During the summer fruit salads of various 'kinds should he freely used, especially for the picnic lunch. There Is such a variety of fruits that one need not repeat. Tuttl Frutti Salad. Take one quarter of n pound of flgs. cut In small pieces, the same amount of stoned and quartered dates, no-half cupful of canned strawberries, the same of canned pineapple 'In Juice of one-half lemon,. two, tablespoonfuls of suJir mid one-half cup 'ul of orange Juice. Serve as dessert. Italian Salad. Take four sardines, three larjze po atoes. three hard-cooked exirs. half i cupful of cooked lima beans. Slice he potatoes, skin ami hone the sarlin.'s and break Into bits, tlien mix villi the potatocf. Put the volks ol 'wo of the eK Into a bowl, .add u ilnch of mu-ttanl. sa'f mid oil cnou;rh o make a smooth cream, add ombird as much vinegar,, as oil. Tom 'his dn.'ssiu over the -salad and aiM he sliredtjed whites. (Jarnish with he winde i' cut in pieces und u few toned olives. Serve well chilled. Royal Soup. This Is another tireless cooker recipe Put a cut-up fowl In a cooker kettle, full of cold watw, boll ten minutes then pack In a cooker for six hours or overnight. Remove the chicken and to the stock add one dozen small onions, two diced carrots, one turnip also diced, one cupful of peas, two bay leaves, salt and pepper. Iteheat the radiator, bring soap to a boll and repack. Do not strain, but serve with grated cheese and buttered toast. The chicken meat may be tied for various dlhes later.

Squabs en Cauerole. Saute six squabs in two tuble-poon-fufs of butter without browning, theu cover with broth, add a sprig of parsley, a bay leaf, and cook until nearly tender; then add a dozeu and a half of button onions which have been parboiled, two dozen potato balls and two half-Inch cubes of fried bacon. When ready to .serve, remove the jmrsley and stir In the yolks of tbre eggs well beaten and added to half of a cupful of crearn ; add a tablespoonf ul of butter or bacon fat. Do not boil after the epgs are. added. Serve from the casserole.

One of the nicest ways to serve squabs is boned and fc stuffed, then roasted. It Is not a difficult process to bone a few birds. The small lr bones are left at the end for a more shapely appearance. .They may be broiled without stuffing If preferred, adding a bit of celery or a piece of onlou to eason the inside of the nird.
