Will women 'wear their winter bats during the approacliinj; heated season or will they wear their summer hats durimr July and August? This is the ml in (juedion of the hour in millinery circles. Certain millinery interests have sent out an edict that Women shall wear velvet, felt and duvetyn hats during July und August and that the straw hats shall o int the discard until the first snowfall. Last season the mUiiners, abetted ! the masculine numbers of the com rnunity ' who never have been able t sre why women should wear fur and velvet in the sweltering summer heat and straw in January, imposed a sensible hat regime on the women of the United States. For just one season the wom. n fr the most part wore straw a,:d net bats fn July and Ausrust. of emirse. there were a few who perslslecl in el vet b:its. with tow-bos of fur for trim tninjr. but tliey were neliible. be c.niiM'. as a matter of f;tet. the women ouldn't find the new winter hats' when they heiran to look for them alonj: about the hist of May. Services for lllinoisan Held in Shade of Immense Hackberry He Owned for Forty Years. Assumption, III. Forty years of care for a hackberry tree that grew in his front yard provided Dr. H. V. Johnson, who died here, with one. of tbe most unique places for a funeral service that this state has ever provided. His request was that the funeral be held in the old trees shade. Hundreds of friends who gathered' at the funeral from Christian ami near-by counties found that tbe tree's immensity was not exaggerated. It rises about. i00 feet in tbe air and spreads over the entire yard in which the homestead is located. Its size has balked all efforts of friends of t lie late Doctor Johnson to measure It with exactitude. Both kites and toy balloons have been used without satisfaction. Seven years ago the tree's height was over -2." feet, and It Is said to have grown phenomenally since. Old settlers of Christian county say it is about the same age as lYoctor Johnson, who died at tbe age of seventyone. Forty years ago he acquired flu property upon which tbe tree grew, and built a home. It had already been growing then for .0 years, they said. Under the doctor's care It has hecome not only a landmark, but one of the niosf, beautiful and Immense, trees of thestate. ' DoctorJohnson was one of the pioneer physicians of central Illinois, having practiced in Christian county !." years.
