RIGHT MEASURES TO KILL DODDER
Experts Say Discovery of This Parasite on Farm Is No Causefor Serious Alarm. , PUN FOR ITS EXTERMINATION Pert Docs Not Cause Damage If Remedies Are Applied Before It Gets Foothold Prevent Seed From Maturing. Prepared by the United States Department of Agriculture. If remedies to exterminate dodder the parasitic plant lnfestinp clover, alfalfa, and some other plants are. applied before It jrets a foothohl, the post does not cause serious damage. If, however, dodder is permitted to develop unmolested, radical measures will he necessary In order to control it. During recent years, specialists of the department say. an increase In the number of complaints of dodder have been received from all parts of the United States. They add. however, that the discovery of this parasite on the farm should not be the occasion of serious alarm, but rnther for the employment of a well-conceived and systematic plan for its extermination. Starts in Small Patches. During the first season of infestation, in clover or alfalfa, dodder usually occurs In small scattered areas. As Is the case In combating all weeds, it Is essential that dodder should not be permitted to mature seed, and sucn small Infested areas should be mowed and the dodder removed or burned in tho Hold to prevent tho development of seed. If seed has formed, burning the patches of dodder is the only remedy, since It kills not only the plants hut also any seeds which may be lying on the surface of the soil. -If infestation is so great that patch treatment cannot be depended upon, it will be necessary, In order to free the farm of the pest, either to plow the crop under or utilize it for hay before seed has formed. In the latter case, the aftermath left on the field should be closely grazed, for which purpose sheep are especially useful. If the Infestation is general and threatens seriously to damage succeeding crops, it may be necessary, according to the bulletin, to cut the crop, allow it to dry. and burn it In the field in order that all dodder seed may be destroyed. Inferior Seed Blamed. As with all weeds, preventing introduction on the farm Is far easier than eradication after It has once gained a foothold. It Is usually Introduced by !fce use of impure seed, and a bulletin urges that farmers learn to distinguish dodder seed so that they can Protect Alfalfa Fields Againsi Dodder by Proper Control Measures. recgnize it when they are purchas :ig 'lover and alfalfa seed. For adequate examination, a magnifying gl:isv is necessary. There is a wide ru: in size of doilder seed, but in general they are usually dull-coated with roughened or minutely pitted surfaces, and usually have two or three fiat surfaces, while the seeds of clover are usually smooth, rounded, and possess a certain luster. Furthermore, the scar on didder seed usually is ry Inconspicuous, whereas the scar on leguminous seeds is clearly evident. When animals are allowed to graze where dodder grows, they should not have access to fields not" infested, since they are likely to spread the weed by means of pieces of stems adhering to their coats and hoofs. On land which contains the seeds f dodder, the bulletin suggests the use of a five-yonr cropping system consisting of plant which are not danu.ged by the pest, and recommends the followtn plants: t'orn. soy beans, velvet beans, cow-peas, and small grains such ss oats, wheat, and rye. Sugar beets, nd"H. fiax. and a few other cultivated plants are subject to dodder Infesfation, hut clover and alfalfa are its important hosts. PREPARE EARLY FOR NEXT CROP OF CORN
Selection of Seed Ears Is of Vital Importance. Avoid Danger of Sprouting in Field With Moist, Damp Weather and Injurious Insects Plowing Is Big Problem. Prepared by the United States Department of Agriculture. Nothing In the line of corn culture is more important than the selection of seed ears and the preparation of land for the next season's crop. Both of these operations should have attention in tho late summer and early fall of the previous year, say experts of the United States Department of Agriculture. Seed can best be selected from the field because then it U possible to observe the condition of the parent stalks as to vigor and freedom from disease. Seed from diseased ears may not grow at all or may prodtu'e weak, barren stalks. Farmers' bulletin 1170, "Control of the Hoot, Stalk and Ear Hot Diseases of Com," which may be had free from the Department of Agriculture, teil? how to detect the diseased ears. Seed ears may be selected as soon as they have gotten their growth and Select the Best Ears This Fall for Next Year's Seed. before the sap is entirely out of them. Uy picking them at this time, the grower avoids danger of sprouting in the Held with moist, damp weather, and also the. langer of destructive insects. After they are picked, the ears should have their moisture taken out as quickly as possible. All that is necessary Is free circulation of air. This can be obtained by drawing back the husks, tying the ears together In pairs and hanging over a wire. If ears are hung in too large clusters, there is danger of mildew. Cure should also be taken to avoid freezing, especially before the ears are thoroughly dry. Fall" plowing Is a matter governed by local conditions, and the farmer's judgment will be called into play. In some localities it is better to plowearly for the conservation of moisture. Plowing under aU of the humus is advisable wherever It can be done, to Improve the physical condition of the soil and increase Its fertility and thus produce strong, vigorous corn. STORAGE TO PREVENT DECAY Ohio Expert Says Place Should Be Dry, Cool and Well Ventilated for Dest Results. That much improvement may be made In the home storing of fruits and vegetables by giving attention to the storage cellar or basement is pointed out by J. Keil, garden assistant at the Ohl experiment station. The storage should he dry. cool, and well ventilated, he states. Spraying the walls with whitewash, to which an ounce of eopper sulphate to one gallon of spray has been added, helps to destroy decay germs. Cooling of the storage may be carried out in most cases by Ventilation, windows being kept open during cool nights anil closed In the daytime. Fruit keeps In storage much better under uniform condition.? of temperature, particularly apples. It Is often possible to keep apples from three to four weeks longer than their regular maturing season by" careful storing. STORE VARIOUS VEGETABLES Different Clasres Require Separate Storage Places Much Depends on the Skin. Different classes of vegetables require different kinds of storage. The sweet potato, sc.uash. pumpkin and fruits of this class must be stored dry and warm rather than cold. Potatoes, cabbages, beets, turnips and the like are stored In n mnlt atmosphere and where the temperature is elose to freezing point ay, P.i degrees F. The manner of storing depends to some extent on the rind of the vegetable. One with n bath ery sk in does not transpire moisture very fast, while tlnwe with a soft skin such as the potato and beet, allow moisture to pass out rapidly and when placed in dry storage, soon shrivel and shrink.

'SHOWING OFF'-THE COLONEL
Storekeeper Had Eye for Business In Keeping Good-Lookino Customer Waiting for Attention. A woman in a small town asked her husband, Colonel Blank, to call in at the dairy when passing to order some new-laid eggs. After making a brief demur the colonel yielded. A little later he called at the shop in question, quite n small and unimportant establishment on a back street. Two or three minutes passed; then, as no oue came to serve him. the colonel gave a gentle knock on the counter. This had no effect; so a smart double rap was given. Then a curlyheaded youngster put his head around the door and announced, "Father's a-comin." By the time the father arrived the colonel was boiling with rage. "What do you mean by keeping me waiting all this time?' he roared. "Very sorry, sir," said the man, "but you see it's like this.
