. ALICE JOyCE Many of th.e greatest men and women of the stae have had their names associated with one certain play. Alice Joyce seems destined to have the same distinction. The Yitaraph star has had success after success, hut, like nil other motion picture stars, she las been without a role that stood out Feparate and distinct from the rest. In "Tht Vengeance of Durand," adapted from Ilex lloach's powerful story adapted by Mr. and Mrs. (teorjr Kandolph Chester, she has the best role In her notable career. Cat "Adopted" Rat. A lady author. Miss I 'ranees Pitt, tells a Canadian newspaper that she once pave a baby rat to a cat whoe kittens had cone out by the waterway, he nursed the little thins, washed it, und treated it In every way as a kitten. The rat learned to know Miss Pitt ns n friend, and became, she say.-, 'one of the tamest creatures I have ever known." It proved n most amusing family pet for nearly two years.

This little house is a regular love nest. It has that most desirable feature individuality. It does not look as though It were built in loni: rows by a contractor, but that It was planned for a regular home by intelligent people. With the proper surroundings in the way of trees and shrubbery, this little home is a constant delight. The plan is so well arranged that housekeeping will not be dillicult without a maid. In planning a heating system, It will not be necessary to excavate the whole basement, the one chimney being so situated that it will care for the kitchen as well as the furnace underneath. The cellar stairway leaddown from the kitchen and there I a stairway leading up from the rear bedroom to the half-story overhead, and the problem of storage is thus fared for very nicely. The whole exterior is stucco and reinforced with triangular mesh galvanized steel which laps around the corners, making a very solid and substantial house whieh will never crack. Under the stimulus of lower prices the consumer is atrain beinninr to be one.

VIOLA DANA
THE ROMANCE OF WORDS
"MRS. GRUNDY." ONCE upon a time and not so very far back, at that there was a real .Mrs. Grundy, the wife of Jude Peliv Inindy of Nahville, Tenn. The lady belonged to the best social et of the Southern city and her opinions on irood form were highly respected thorh. in the liu'ht of modern usmcs they would be considered extremely strai'htdae d. Purine the time at which Mrs. Felix Grundy ruled the social set of Nashville it happened that a theatrical eompuny visited the city, predentin:: a play known as "Speed the plough." History does not state whether the piece was humorous or serious, vulvar or refined. In Mrs. Grundy's mind it was enough that it was a dramatic production for the wife of the judu'e held that the-ater-goin was a pastime which should not be indulged In by ladies and gentlemen because of the fact that it was frowned upon by the church. By a curious coincidence, one of the characters of the play was also named Mrs. Grundy ami thc audience laughed whenever slie was mentioned.' The connection was later explained to Noah M. Ludlow, manager of the company, and the name was launched in theatrical parlance as the title of a mythical person who rules the social and moral destinies of 0 community. After Martin Van Buren's election to the presidency. Judge Grundy was made attorney general of the United States but his claim to fame Is as nothing when compared to that of his wife. (Copyright.)'

XPERTS are agreed that sooner
, or later there may be a slump in,
tinancial matters, and that money will be much harder to get than it is now. Salaries may fall, there may again be much unemployment in short, after a lot of fair weather, rain may be looked for. Are you getting your umbrella and overshoes, metaphorically speaking, for the wet spell? In other words, are you laying aside some of the money you are getting today for the time when you lind it dillicult to make as much? No woman in business or employment of any kind should spend her entire income. Even with the best of luck there is likely to be a time when money is badly needed, and when a sum in the bank or properly invested may be really a life saver.
