Trees for a Treeless Town. This year Freedom, Wyoming, Is enJoying the novelty of trees along its streets and on its lawns because one woman had vision enough to see trees there and determination enough to pet them planted. Freedom is situated In the treeless part of Wyoming. It hail no trees, and no one seemed to regard it as possible to have any. Finally, one woman wrote to the state agricultural college for advice and learned that the blue spruce would do well in thnt region and that the forestry division would furnish transplants for 5 cents apiece. Starting with a goal of 2"i0 trees, she kept on until she had succeeded In getting 1,100 planted by the Interested residents. Now the whole country is planting blue spruces. "Why do you object to being called 'colonel'?" "Well," replied Uncle lilll liottletop, "I never was In the army and I don't make speeches and I never take J a drink and I honestly don't feel that I have any claim to the title." VFiT! TT TTT TY- TT 11 Plumes Curled and Uncurled Now Prime Favorite. Fluffy Decoration Affords the Most Popular Hat .Trimminq of the Season. Ostrich Is the most popular hat trimming of the season. Long, graceful, soft curled plumes, little chic French tips curled very tightly, ostrich' "fancies" of various sorts and the uncurled, feather-duster type of ostrich share honors about equally. One of the methods employed for trimming a very small hat with ostrich is to attach a curled plume at ePher side so that it forms a sort of eiir mult and effectually conceal:; the hair. Such a hat recently shown was of blue and sliver brocade made on a turban frame, very closely draped, and with r-Iumes In smoke gray drooping 'at cither side. Still another charming small hat-was of smoke gray velvet with the merest suggestion of a brim in front, two long curled plumes in self-color being joined In the center hack, so they extended across the back and curled down a trifle at either side. Sapphire blue is well up in front In the millinery eoldr procession. Many well draped hats art fashioned of velChic Little Jardlne Hat with Brim Trimming of Feathers. vet In this shade oT blue. One charming little turban seen was made of inch-wide sapphire blue velvet ribbon woven basket fashion, Interwoven silver threads giving a pretty note of contrast. A single soft feather was caught at one side. The entire hat, except for the silver threads, was In the vivid blue, so extraordinarily beautiful when becoming. LINGERIE BLOUSES HOLD OWN Dainty Garments of Sheer Cotton Ma. terial Continue to Be Strong Favorite; Trimming Novelties. The fine lingerie blouse never goes out of fashion. Notwithstanding the fact that Innumerable styles- In silk and georgette models, lovely affairs of lace, etc., areavallable for wear during the winter months, the demand for the sheer cotton blouse continues strong. Little that is unusual or new In style line is shown, but quite a number of new trimming novelties are offered. Madiera embroidery is generally used and filet lace and embroidery are frequently combined with very good effect, bands of the lace being joined

Frock for Afternoon Wear
Taffeta or Faille Silk Favorite of Moment Made With Plain, LongWaisted Eodice. For afternoon wear the frock of taffeta or faille silk seems to be the first favorite of the moment, made with a severely plain, rather long-walsted little bodice that clings closer to the figure than the chemise frock, but makes no effort to fit in any correct sense of the word. Whereas In former days such a bodice would have been severely boned, it is now allowed to wrinkle softly in the region of the waist line. The skirts are puffed or draped or held out slightly from the hips by a clever contrivance of piping cords or Tuchings. It is interesting to notice that, however much the present-day fashions luve borrowed their inspiration from the past century, they are yet essentially modern and express the freer thought of today. We see no sign of the return of the tight waist or the boned bodice and we just know that the modern woman would never put up with such Inconvenience and discomfort for one moment. Another style which Is seen In some of the new models is the cross-over bodice, the ends of which tie at the back and can either be bunched into a j large bow to give the bustle effect or may be loosely knotted and allowed to hang down to the hem of the skirt. These dresses are very graceful and becoming, the slanting lines over the hips being especially suitable for the figures which might find the severity of the pl?ln hodice rather trying. A
THE CAPE AND MUFF OF MOLE Here is a jaunty little cape of mole. It is banded and collared with gray fox. With the muff of mole makes a smart winter costume. to embroidered motifs, or vice versa. Collars and cuffs are frequently finished with hand-sewn scallops that are dainty and serviceable. The charm of the lingerie waist la In the daintiness of its construction and all of the best models are practically entirely hand made. Hand drawn work Is popular and a touch of color Is frequently given the blouse by the use of colored thread In making the drawn work pattern. Many women buy plain hand-mad? blouses in the shops and finish them nt home by applying edgings of filet or Irish crochet lace, letting in panels and Inserts of hand-made lace, embroidery, etc. By this process the uninteresting part of the work is avoided and when finished the garment will be a thing of beauty and a real treasure from the standpoint of money value. Applique motifs are employed as t "Imming on many of the georgette and silk blouses shown this season. Taffeta may be applied onto georgette, while on taffeta blouses felt, dnvciyn and even patent leather motifs are appJed. Beads and jet nail heads also figure prominently as trimmings. Changing Pillow Covers. How many housewives have ever thought of using the vacuum cleaner for changing the covers on their feather pillows? inquires Delineator. You know the usual preliminaries an empty room if possible, covered hair, and cotton clothes now no longer necessary If a vacuum cleaner Is available for use. The clean slip is fastened securely to the opening which usually holds the bag. A small opening in the old pillow is slipped over and fastened to the short tube used for the attachments, the button turned and, presto, the clean slip is filled with feathers. Black Frocks Are Fashion. A recent Paris dispatch states that black frocks are a distinct fashion note In that gay city. Earlier In the season many of the lighter shades of brown were featured by practically every modiste and couturier, but the Parisian did not take kindly to them as they are trying shades for the average com plexion. So until recently not many of these tones, save cocoa brown, have been worn. Now cinnamon colored hats are making their appearance both on the street and In the smart restau rants. Frocks In this tint are also noted. Coats That Are Popular. Plaid homespun coats on loose, flowing lines are popular. A favorite pattern is of gray, with faint lavender stripes. dress of this description was carried out in changing taffeta of blue and mauve, the sleeves and neck being turned back with plain mauve satin. Charmeuse and cachemire de sole would be equally suitable materials for such a design. Dainty Handkerchiefs. Dainty handkerchiefs may be made from old crepe de chine blouses, can lisoles and underthlngs. A square uu iy be cut from each side of the front and ethers from the back and tops of sleeves. These squares may be tinted with simple dye preparation. Holl the hems and overcast in two directions to give the appearance of crossstitch, embroidering a tiny rambler rose or flower spray in the corner with bright silk. Thus for an expenditure of 15 or 20 cents you will have handkerchiefs that would cost several dollars In the shops. Girdles and Belts Missing. Girdles and belts are among the missing this season, at least where evening gowns are concerned. The draping takes consideration of the waistline, making som concession In the way of massed folds at that point, but it does not very often make use of a girdle. Corduroy Is Serviceable. For a really serviceable cold weather negligee garment no better fabric selection than corduroy can be thought of.
