THANKSGIVING By JAMES W. DECKMAN.

We observe Thanksgiving day In

keeping with the time-honored cu torn of the Pilgrims.

Thanksgiving day waa bom In the hearts of a grateful little group of

people who had survived a harrowing

season. '

Real thanksgivings art those which

come spontaneously In momenta of

gratitude for deliverance from dis

tress, appreciation of the beauties of

life or enjoyment of genuine friend ship.

Wo are thankful that most of our

troubles never happened and tha

those which did passed over like the storms. Tho wealth of the world has been filling our coffers to overflowing. Minions of Mammon give thanks like the blatant fatted calf, all unmindful of the fate of the fattened andjsattened. We are thankful to havo gone through another year w4th Its alternating Joys and sorrows and await with hope and fortitude the things the next may bring forth. Trustworthy observers testify.' that

Russian autocracy and Russian 'mili

told tliat this Is all for his own good.

That Is what the czar said.

Ain't It Splendid? . AIN'T It eplcndld to be llvln. long about this time o' year, ' Just around before Thankpslvln, with tho mornings crisp and clear; With the children's cheeks a-glowln, with tho future lookln bright, . ; And the shops and mill u'Roln' llko ted blazon, day and night? Tho effort to put dueling under tho ban In Franco looks like no effort to discourage what has always been looked upon as a. healthful and Invigorating outdoor sport.

Ain't It fine to feel the nlppln' of the brisk breeze at your nose When the old dead leaves go ilppln. down the lanes, In pcroggly rows. When you've hay to feed the cattle, when you love your fellow men, And you've money you can rattle In your trousers, now and then?
