FIND ALTAR ROOM OF AZTECS

Interesting Discovery in Pueblo Ruin In New Mexico Has Recently Been Made.

The most satisfactory event to mark so far the work of the 'American Museum of Natural History in Its excavation of the Pueblo ruin at Azler, N. M., is the recent discovery of what was evidently the holiest shrine of this prehistoric people, records Popular Mechanics Magazine. It takes the form of n room, bare of furniture, but in perfect condition. The walls are plastered, and are painted in a glaring white with dull red borders and a frieze of triangular designs. On the celling beams are strange marks made by nibbing the palm and fingers In white paint, and then pressing them upon the wood. From these beams hang several strands of beautifully made rope, presumably for the support of some sacred objects. On the ceiling, too. Is carved a serpent, two and one-half feet In length, and In design unlike anything known to the archeologists in charge.

ROCKING CHAIR IS INDORSED

French Authorities Declare Great American "Institution" to Be Physiologically Correct.

Nobody who has studied the rocking chair will be surprised to hear that the French Academy of Science has declared It the most hygienic of all seats Instead of a mere American fad. It is, as the academy says, physiologically correct. The trouble with It is that It Is not always psychologically correct. Its baneful elTects are not on the rocker, but on the beholder. It is an all-around joy only when it Is not rocked. New England Indies used to test a new neighbor by getting, her to sit In a rocking chair. If she could resist rocking she was of the elect. This simple test of the nerves has made or marred a great many newcomers' popularity. The advantage of the rocking chnlr Is that It puts the body In perfect balance. The skull Is kept in the proper position. Hut oscillation does not add to the benefit. . It Is good to tlnd an invention which has been maligned because of misuse Indorsed by the scientists. Let these gentlemen next find something good to say about silk hats.

That Shippers May Understand Restrictions Regulation Has Been Clarified.

TEST EMIGRANT SHIPMENTS

Registration of Temperatures Discontinued at Eighteenth Hour After Injection of Tuberculin Heifers on Same Basis. Modifications In the restrictions on Interstate shipment of cattle Imposed for the prevention of the spread of cattle tuberculosis are announced by the bureau of animal Industry of the United States department of agriculture. In order that live stock shippers may more readily underhand the restrictions, the entire regulation has been redrafted and the lansuae clarified. One of the modifications Is for the aid of emigrants who live In sparsely settled sections of the country where It would be very expensive to have their cattle tested before moving them to another state. Such shipments usually do not puss through public stockyards, and veterinarians are not always available in such sections. The new regulation, therefore, penults emigrant shipments to be tested en route or at the destination. Permission to do so, however, must first be received from the bureau inspector in charge of tuberculosis eradication work in the state of destination, or from the proper state olllcial. Data gathered from the various state and bureau field workers, It is said, clearly Indicate that the tuberculosis test can be shortened two hours without Interfering with its efficiency. A modification, therefore, was made permitting the metering of temperatures to be discontinued at the eighteenth hour after the Injection of tuberculin instead of the twentieth hour. Time Limit Removed. It was found advisable, too, to remove the time limit in which purebred

WEEVILS AND OTHER INSECTS

Little Pests May Be Kept Out of Seeds by Use of Carbon Bisulfide How to Treat Them.

Weevils and other insects may be Kept out of seeds by the use of carbon bisulfide. Seeds should be treated once as soon as the planting season is over, which will protect them from weevil during the summer. The second treatment should be given in the fall before cold weather comes on. To treat seeds with carbon bisulfide, put them in a jar, tub or other vessel which can be covered tightly. Put in about one tablespoonful of carbon bisulfide for every 10 gallons of space in the enclosure. Allow the seeds to remain in the fumes of the carbon bisulfide over night, then take them out and place again In dry storage quarters.

PUTTING ALFALFA INTO SILO Good Results Have Been Obtained Where Rain Interferes With Making Hay. In sections where rain interferes with alfalfa hay making, good results have bceii'obtalned by putting the alfalfa in the silo. The most favorable reports state that the alfalfa should bo in full bloom or fairly well matured before cutting for silage. It should be cut when the dew Is on or wet from rain and hurried to the silo. Cut in short lengths, the finer the better, as It packs more (Irmly and keeps with less waste. When put into the silo before It becomes sutficiently mature, alfalfa makes a very sour sllcge and has a disagreeable odor. First rop alfalfa Is preferred by most of the men who have tried alfalfa silage.

Heglnnlngs In poultry raising, may be made at any time of the year, but the fall Is perhaps the best time for small poultry keepers to make thelf start. Obtain pullets whenever possible rather than older hens, say experts of the United States department of agriculture. The pullets selected should be well matured so they will lay before cold weather sets In. 'Here are the signs of maturity In pullets: Red color of the comb, and size and growth which are creditable for the breed or variety raised. Mature hens lay few eggs, If any, during the fall and early winter, while they are molting. Well-matured pullets, on the other hand, should lay fairly well and give an Immediate return on the Investment. When pullets are to be purchased it Is desirable to go to some farmer

GOOD SUBSTITUTES FOR HAY

Corn Fodder Can Be Made Most Satisfactory Roughage Feed for Farm Animals. The short hay crop this year in certain localities will make, the hay sell at n high price In those places. This situation has brought many men to the question of what is to be done for feed. The answer to this problem can be found without going off the farm, in many ease. A great deal of good feed blows to the wind every year in our cornfields. Corn fodder ran be made one of the very satisfactory feeds for use with cattle and roughage for other animals. Corn fodder, if It is to be made into a good feed, should be handled as carefully as other feeds. It should be cut when the kernels are glazed and before a killing frost. Shocks should be of a medium size and well tied., so that the feed will be properly preserved. Oat straw, where it is not rusted, makes a very good feed for the wintering of horses. Straw or corn stover will not take the place of clover or alfalfa hay for feeding dairy cattle or in the fattening of other animals, but with stock which Is being roughed through, it can be used very satisfactorily.

TO PREVENT GARLIC FLAVOR

Where Found in Small Patches Fence Off and Pasture Grass to Sheep or Other Animals. Garlic flavor in milk may he prevented by keeping the cows away from the garlic or wild onions. If they are found only In small spots of the pasture they may frequently be fenced off and the grass pastured by young stock, sheep or horses. Rut If the garlic Is pretty well distributed the objectionable flavor can be reduced to a minimum by taking the cows from the pasture at least four hours before milking. At noon put them in the barn or in a pasture free from garlic.

LATE CHICKS REQUIRE CARE Plentiful Supply of Sour Milk Helps to Produce Rapid Growth Furnish Dry Mash. The late hatched chicks can seldom be made as profitable as early hatched stock, but the handicap of age can be partially made up by good care. Chicks that are hatched during hot weather must have shade provided for them. Plenty of sour milk helps to produce a rapid, vigorous growth. It pays to keep a dry mash before them at all times and have the hopper wide enough so that the most vigorous chicks will not crowd the chicks awn v.
