HUT CAM BE CONTROLLED After Experiments Solution of Formaldehyde . Is Recommended by Specialists. YOUNG SEEDLINGS ATTACKED After Plants Are About Three Inches High They Become Immune to Infection Care Necessary in Applying Treatment. (Prepared by the United States Depart ment of Agriculture.) The spread of onion smut into the laro northern onion sections and Its increasing prevalence each year have emphasized the importance of a practical means of control for this desease. After careful experimentation, specialists of the United States department of agriculture recommend a solution of formaldehyde In the furrow with the seed. Onion smut is caused by a fungous parasite which lives in the soil and, when once introduced, spreads slowly to adjoining areas. In the spring, at the time when the onion heeds are germinating, the smut spores, or seed bodies, also germinate and infect the young seedlings, causing brown to black elongated blisters within the scales or leaves, which often split open, exposing the powdery black masses of spores. Altec ted leaves usually are slightly thickened and often curve downward. Many of the young seedlings an? so heavily attacked that they die within three to live weeks after germination. Others may survive until harvest time and reach the warehouse or. market. Controlled by Formaldehyde. A peculiar and important fact about onion smut is that the onion plant can bo attacked by a fungus only while in the young seedling stage. After the plants are about three inches high they become immune to infection by the smut fungus, and onion sets or seedlings three to four inches high .r.: Onion Smut Can De Controlled by Application of a Solution of Formaldehyde in the Furrow With the Seed. transplanted to siuut-infe.sted soil will not contract the disease. In t ho larke commercial onion districts of the Northern states, where the use of sets or seedlings is impractical, advantage is taken of the fact that onion smut can be controlled by the application of a solution of formaldehyde in the furfrow with the sred. Since the young onion seedling is susceptible to the disease for only a short time, it is necessary to use only enough of the disinfectant to keep the fungus in check in the soil close to the seed. The apparatus for applying the formaldehyde solution consists of a galvanized iron tank, which is attached to the oulon seeder. Such an attachment is illustrated and described In detail in United States department of agriculture Fanners' r.ulletin VW, which will be sent to any applicant upon request. Cnre Necessary In Applying. J rent care sbould be used in apply inu' this treatment, since too strong a solution will prevent tbe onion seed from germinating", while too weak a solution will not hobl tbe fungus in cheek. Repeated rcrent experiments eomluete! I tbe department of agriculture in the Kacine (Wis.) dMrict bave sbowu tbat -t callous per aere will give th" most satisfactory results and tbat tln ie is no advantage in tbls cum in ulng a stronger solution than 1 :1-S (one pint of formaldehyde to sixteen gallons of water). Where there is serious objection to Using this amount id liquid, because of dlltieulty of application, tbe quantity may be reduced to l'jti to lot gallons, but In this case a stronger solution should be ued (two pints of formaldehyde to sixteen gallons of water). Kalsiug the strength of the solution beyond tbls point entails danger of reduction 'f tbe stand, due to seedling Injury. In sowing union seed for onion sets, a they are grown In the Wisconsin. Illinois and Indiana section by tbe slegle row method, about twenty times as much seed is used per rov as In the ease of large bulb production. This fact does not necessarily alter the quantity of formaldehyde solution to he applied, since tbe same amount of soil surrounding the seed I to be illsInfected in either cast. Results socured with the use of the above formula by onion-set growers Indicate It to be the proper one for use with this crcp. With the n;u!tiplo-rov system. In use In certain onion districts, a different formula will be necessary.

GARDEN SEED SUPPLY IS QUITE PLENTIFUL Certain Varieties of Peas Are Possible Exception.
Conditions Should Prove Favorable to Extensive Planting Shortage, of Labor Is Reported on East em Truck Farms. (Prepared by the United States Department of Agriculture.) Indication that there Is a plentiful supply of garden seeds this sprintr, with the possible exception of certain varieties of peas, Is contained in reports received by the bureau of markets from representative seed dealers engaged in wholesale, retail r.nd mail-order business. Study of several mail-order catalogues indicates that in the majority of cases the prices of seeds are less than for the past two years, the greatest reduction being for cabbage seed. Marked reductions are i There is Urgent Need for Gardens Like This This Year The Prospect of a Shortage 0 Truck Garden Vegetables Makes Home Food Production Particularly Important. also shown in the prices for garden beet, carrot, onion, spinach and English and Swedish turnip seed. An increase of about IS per cent is noted in the prices for garden peas, while similar increases 'tre shown for muskmelon, summer and winter squash, and tomato seed. This condition should prove favorable to extensive garden planting, which is urged by the United States department of agriculture. Iteplies to inquiries addressed to representative seed dealers showed that a few in industrial centers, particularly in the East, were selling from 10 to HO per cent less seed than last year. The cause, apparently, was the shortage of labor on truck farms. Compared with normal conditions before the war, the reduction in these Eastern centers ranges from 10 to 4f per cent. On the whole the sales to home gardeners seem to be larger than those of last year, ranging from a 5 per cent increase in some sections to f0 per cent in others. Dealers in the most Northerly cities were unable to report adequately because the season had not advanced sufficiently at the time replies were sent in. GOOD FARM HOUSES FAVORED Essential That Dwellings Be Close to Other Buildings Flowers Aid Appearance. The dwelling is the headquarters of the farm business. Chores are done before breakfast ami often after supper, the stock need close attention, certain farm seeds are kept in the house, the hired man may sleep there, and the women folks often take care of the poultry; thus it is almost essential that the hous.- be reasonably close to the other buildings', says the United States department of agriculture. The value of the house constitutes an Important part of the real estate value of the farm. On the higherpriced corn-belt farms the value of the dwelling repiesents from r to IT per cent of the real estate value of the farm, while In the eastern part of the t'ulbd States this percentage Is more commonly I'd per cent nr over. A good crop rotation Increases yields. Alfalf will grow best on high well drained soils. t Excessive feeding of lubricating oils often tauses deposits of carbon in the tractor ngine. Baby SpecialistSo pIAr there are Physicians who specialize on Infant ailments you know. All Physicians understand Infant troubles: all Physicians treat them. It is hia profession, his duty, to know human ills from the Stork to the Great Beyond, But in serious cases he calls in the Specialist. Why? He" knows as every Mother knows, or ought to know, that Baby is just a baby, needing special treatment, special remedies. Can a Mother be less thoughtful ? Can a Mother try to relieve Baby with a remedy that she would use for herself? Ask yourself; and answer honestly I Always remember that Baby is just a baby. And remembering this you will remember that Fletcher's Castoria is made especially for Infants and Children.
