Constant Losses Call for Vigorous Crusade by Farmers. To Rid Country of Noxious Plants Would Put Agriculture Forward Almost Incalculably Simple Methods Effective. The fact that farmers are crying for relief from the weed pest, and that the government Is trying to aid them, Is one of the encouraging signs of the day. To rid the country of weeds would put agriculture forward almost Incalculably. An enormous amount of labor is involved every year in the extermination of weeds. Not only are these weeds troublesome to cultivated agricultural crops, but they are troublesome in meadows and pastures. The cornfields and cultivated crops generally must be kept clean if a crop is to be produced. Of course, the farmer would want to till his soil whether weeds occurred or not. A soil that is not cultivated would not produce a remunerative crop. But the weeds have come to stay, and the farmer must till the soil to keep the weeds in subjection. Persistence, by simple methods will be more effective than spasmodic efforts and oftentimes more expensive Black Mustard. processes. While direct methods may often be effective, the most successful will be those having to do with the conditions of agriculture and the methods of tillage and increase the productiveness of the soil. Weeds grow where they can find room to grow. Some crop 3 then permit certain weeds to grow witli them, while another weed may find congenial conditions with another crop. Thus cockle and cheat have grown with wheat perhaps as long as wheat has been cultivated. Purslane and pigweeds are always found in garlens, thistles and mulleins in pastures, whitetop in meadows. If the pea vine, horse nettle, crabgrass, foxtail, ragweed, etc., become serious in the cornfield, sow It down to grass, one crop in the rotation destroying these weeds gaining a foothold with the preceding crop. Thorough cropping of the land and judicious systematic rotation of the crops, are conditions against which no weeds can stand ; and, inasmuch as these are all vital conditions of successful agriculture, it may be said that weeds are never serious when the land is well farmed. Failure to Utilize Full Value of Material Increases Cost of Meat Production. A vast quantity of feed available for cattle is now either wasted absolutely or put to some less profitable use, according to a recent report of the department of agriculture. Failure to utilize the full value of their material has increased unnecessarily the cost of producing meat, has diminished the profits from cattle feeding, and has' discouraged many farmers from engaging in an industry essential to their permanent prosperity. According to this report, the loss In grain, straw and corn stover amounts to more than $100,000,000 annually. Both of these products are disposed of most economically when fed to cattle in connection with some form of concentrated feed. Straw is especially valuable in carrying the breeding herd through the winter, in wintering stockers and as a supplementary roughage for fattening cattle. Stover, too, is an excellent feed for wintering cattle, especially mature breeding cows. Nevertheless, in many sections of the country where these products are abundant, little attempt is made to take advantage of their value for these purposes. CLOVER AND ALFALFA BLOAT Trouble Is Due to Fermentation of Sugar Contained in Blossoms Formalin Is Favored. (By DR. C. C. LIPP.) According to circular 5 of the Kentucky experiment station, it has been found that the cause of bloat in cattle following the eating of either clover or alfalfa pasture is due to the fermentation of the sugar contained in the blossoms. Bed clover blossoms contain about 3.6 per cent sugar, alfalfa blossoms 2.8 per cent. Soon after being eaten, fermentation begins, resulting in the production of a considerable quantity of carbon dioxide. This distends the first stomach or rumen and produces the condition known as bloat. The authors of the Kentucky bulletin strongly recommend the use of formalin for this condition. One quart of aiy2 per cent solution is given as a drench. This 1 percent solution is made by adding three tablespoonfuls of formalin to one quart of water. Gentle exercises should be given the animal if possible after the medicine has been given. This treatment is simple, safe, and inexpensive, and should be kept on hand so that it may be used on a moment's notice should necessity require. This shade attachment is separate from the house Itself and may be easily moved. REMEDIES FOR LICE ON HOGS Nebraska College of Agriculture Say Crude Oil Probably Cheapest and ' Most Effective. Of the remedies commonly used for lice on hogs, the Nebraska college of agriculture says that crude oil is probably the cheapest and the most effective, as it kills not only the lice, but the nits as well at one application. The most convenient method of applying is by means of a hog oiler, of which there are several good types. These have the advantage of being always ready and need little attention except keeping oil supplied. The best type of oiler Is one that enables the pig to get the oil to all parts of the body. If there is any indication of skin disease, the part should be scrubbed with a broom or brush so as to get the oil well into the skin. Where crude oil is used, it will be noticed that the skin and hair are improved in appearance. Where the floors of the pens or sheds are of dirt, a liberal application of oil will keep down the dust as well as aid in killing lice. CARE OF CREAM IN SUMMER Cleanliness Is First Rule to Observe Dirty Surroundings Result in Poor Milk. During the hot days of summer the farmer who is selling cream to the creamery finds it a problem to keep his cream in the proper condition. However, there are but a few simple rules which should be followed that would result In better cream. First of all these is cleanliness. Dirt, remember, carries bad flavors. If the barn or its surroundings and cows are dirty it will result in poor milk; poor milk results in poor cream ; poor crevim results In poor, butter.
