20th Century Club Banquet The Twentieth Century Club entertained their husbands and friends at a Barquet given in honor of the Indiana Centenniel

at tne btewart Jtiouse, Feb. 12, 1916. At 8 o'clock the members of the club and their guests marched into the dkiing room, Miss Vesta Gasser playing the march,

and found their places at the table which was beautifully decorated with jonquils and ferns. After a four course luncheon, the party enjoyed a program of

Indiana songs sung by the club, a very enthusiastic talk by Miss Genevieve Williams of Huntingburg, an interesting address by Judge Bretz and a very pretty sola by Mrs. Geo, W. Haberly. The party went home at a late hour feeling that they had en joyed a most pleasant evening, and the members of the club that they must in some way leave a

Sec. i. The sale, manufacture for sale, trannrfnttn

sale, and exportation for sals of intoxicating liquors for beverage purposes in the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof are forever prohibited. Sec. 2. Congress sball have power to enforce this article by all needful legislation. 1

Above is the amendment which the political prohibitionists would attach to our Federal Constitution. It is the same amendment which was defeated at the last session of Congress, but it will again be brought forward by its sponsors.

jln one respect, and only one, is the Hobson measure specific - it

wuum uestroy tne legal liquor industry and liquor trade. Its omissions have been so carefully analyzed bysincere prohibitionists that it is unnecessary for those interested in the liquor business to do more than repeat what has been said concerning this measure, by those who honestly believe in prohibition for prohibition s sake and not for political purposes.

Although the defects of the Hobson resolution as a prohibition agent

were quire generally known to members.of Congress, it was not until last July, when ex-Governor Hanly denounced the measure, that the public became suspicious of the scheme. Since then the bill has been torn to pieces, more by the "drys" than by the liquor interests. Below are enumerated some of the possibilities of the Hobson resolution, all of them auife evident tn

who reads it. Hobson's amendment would remove all State and Federal taxation from liquors.

It would nermit the frp

. . i - uuiwouiwcu maiiuiaciure or an aiconouc drinks for private consumption or to be given away. It would tolerate a still for making spirituous liquors in every home buch a still can be rigged up easily at a cost of less than two dollars.

It would allow social clubs or other organizations to operate com

mon suns to supply liquor to their members.

It would so cheapen liquor by removing the tax that any cafe could

w.iu ea!,e serve annus to its patrons free of charge and in perfect accord with the law. 4

It would wipe out all the wise regulations of the various states for

ine restriction ot drinking.

It would (destroy the milder drinks, the manufacture of which requires both time and complicated process, and would substitute ardent spirits, easily and cheaply made.

It would require a force of detectives as large as our standing army

ior eniorcement, especially m the industrial centers which do not want prohibition.

Last July 9, when the politicians back of the Hobson bill were in

action at wasnington, ex-Uovernor Hanly arose to protest against the measure. He demanded the elimination of the words for sale", hoping thereby to make the bill a genuine prohi bition proposal. He contended, says a press dispatch, that the Hobson resolution would be ineffective as a temperance measurethat under it liquor could be manufactured for personal use and to be given.away,Jand that the result would be innumerable small stills.

For his sincerity, Hanly has been ostracized by the political prohi-

7 organization. Members of Congress, life-Ion advocates ot the temperance cause, have been marked for defeat because they refused to support the Hobson fake prohibition resolution. This advertisement authorized by the Indiana Brewers Association
