The New Year

We have passed the door which

pens to another year. The door was opened to me by hands not

wv own. l couia not stay in tno

bid year any longer even if I had

tried. I lo ed its suns and snows ts storms and darkness, its days of Mght and shadow were good to me. Tho pain I suffered like tho

year is gone. Then somo days

there was the touch of gentle

hands and the kinship of under standing hearts, these made my

weariness endurable, xet now

it is all past save the memory oi'

it and tne euect ot it, tnere are

P 1 1 of my latest self. But what .f this strange new year? What?

Ought we to ask ! A veil is over its coming days which only the future can reveal. We only know that vve have started it. It may mean the end of life and again amount to only a small period of c-xistance an annual unit in the span of life. Which will furnish further adventure for good or it. Who knows? Still we shall travel onward and help our brothers on the way. The Road to Yesterday, Why travel it? A tangled skein so why Uuravel it? The future calls you on, The past ia dead, And 1 you hope to do Lies just ahead. To-morrow resüs with Death and Fate.

But yesterday is ours to keep

To day s a tale we shall relate.

When wakened by some fut-

sleep. .

But .vesterday! Ah maid of

Demand and Supply' By James C. Kelly It is a foot Aonernlly conceclod that boforo (ho supply, there nuiBl nlwnys bo tho demand, This acknowledged rulo may be applied to the liquor problem or trade a well m to'hny other branch of commerce, and yet our prohibition advocate havo failed utterly to reckon with thin (act. Wo t ike it thnt tho main purpose of the sincere prohibitionist ia to Mop tho consumption of alcoholic liquori, and yet any honest HdrvM can see, upon a moment's reflection, that he is notbölnjj led toward his real floal by hit professional leaders, Instead of going directly to the source of w'ui he considers an evil, hoatrikesat a i 'suit which is, in this case, the upply. How hopelc :s his task, is best shown by the deplorable failure of prohibition to curtail the demand for and consumption of liquor in so-called "dry" territory. We have it from a leader of the prohibition organization that half of our prpulation resides in "dry" tenitory. Most of this result has been accomplished in the last thirteen or fourteen years, but during hat time the sales of malt beverages have in-' creased from fifteen to twenty-two gallons per capita and the sales of spirits more than fifty per cent. Thus has prohibition curtailed the demand for liquors. One who may wonder why the liquor trade so strenuously opposes prohibition in view of the above facts needs only to investigate and he will find that it is not the' legitimate manufacturer but the vendor of low-class drink who profits by the prohibition process.

Statistics show that many more than half the men of t

nation consume alcoholic liquors. Remember this fact

next you witness an attempt to make criminal the sale of

for which there is such a universal demand. And rerac

that the demand always precedes the supply. If, the iuppl

criminal the demand roust be placed in the same category.
