MODERN LIVING COMES HIGH Observer Thinks There Are Too Many "Necessities" in Demand at the Present Time. "Ono of the reasons for the cost 01 living," qbserves a wise clubman, "lies in the fact that people buy wholly unnecessary things. I had a conversation with the proprietor of a novelty shop in Fifth avenue a few days ago. A shiny object had attracted my attention, and inquired about its use. " 'These,' said the proprietor, 'are gilded pincers to pick up letters one has placed on the letter-scales.' " 'And that ivory stick, carvea and forked at the end?' " 'People use that to fish out things they have dropped into carafes.' " 'That square of morocco, about the size of a nut what is that for? " 'That's a tampon used to press down stamps after sticking them on envelopes.' 44 4That ornamental box with a whole battery of little brushes?' 44 'Those are to clean other brushes; .brushes to clean hair-brushes, brushes to clean tooth-brushes.' SHOULD MATCH SKIRT
SEASON'S BLOUSE CALLS FOR DEEP CONSIDERATION. Changing Styles Have Caused Many Points to Enter Into Final Decision Made Simulated Basque Received With Favor. That garment which goes with the coat and suit is never easy to choose, and it is especially difficult this season for several reasons, chief of which is the fashion for one-piece Green Brocade Dancing Frock. A Jeweled Sash and Straps of Black Tulle Over the Shoulders Complete the Effect. frocks and the consequent desire of most women to have their blouses appear as a continuation of the skirt and serve for all manner of occasions when the coat miiF be lifted. It has long been a t.shion to retain the coat in a room where one is calling or lunching except in a private house at a formal meal and this gave rise to some carelessness concerning the kind of a blouse beneath, the main object being to secure good neckwear, which was much in evidence because the jacket was loosened. Now the wheel has turned. The incoming o'f the top coat, which is removed in the dressing room, and the lushion for the one-piece frock have resulted in a demand for a blouse that carries out the component parts of the skirt or, at least, strongly suggests it in color and in design. This does not mean that the wash white blouse is forsaken. On the contrary, it has developed strength through the cotton crusade and such a popular factor in separate blouses. First, georgette crepe took the place of the chiffon, then women went back to their first love, which is the simple blouse of a washable white material not overburdened because of this verdict, the overtrimmed thin waists in nonwashable materials seem to be out of , keeping with the season. The shops show them plentifully, and yet one knows that they are not in first style. Even the muslin ones are plain, tucks or hemstitching constituting the chief handwork, and now that the high collar is really established, there is no excuse for lace there, unless one uses a good quality of Valenciennes or filet. Any kind of lace is preferable to the starched muslin band about the neck, which demands veritable beauty for its setting. Decidedly the new movement in separate waists, however, is the simulated basque. It was worn in Paris as far back as last March, and it was adopted here in a modified form that was not quite as artistic as it might have been. This season the shops have found such blouses imCONSIDER NOW THE NECKTIE Important in Scheme of Costume Is This Adornment, Now in Such Great Variety. High, straight fur neckties of the "tour do cou" order are again very fashionable for girls. These ties are charming when made of ermine and finished off at one side with a bunch of black tails. Similar ties are made of skunk and fastened with a dark crimson rose, yet others arc carried out in mink and dark rovn chiffon. A velvet epidemic is here. Thero was no foreshadowing of it in the French styles shown in August, which goos to prove thai wo liko to dress as our neighbors dross, for the clny that a few smart women Indulged in velvet gowns the mass followed suit. An Ingenious way of keeping the stinh at the desired low wnist lino was awu on another model irt aimed in military style. Straps of bwid hold nt both ends with little stiver buttons were placed nt intervals, forming a prescribed truck for the black satin fftrdta. The girdle is often the only detail of a costume that attracts attention This fart should be made the most of by women obliged to plan a winter outfit on a limited dress allowance, as a few adjustable girdles and sashes will not only furnish variety but also provldo tho easiest moans to bring last yoar'a dresses up to tho present-day styles. Probably wo are tired of tho plaited tunic, and, not quite accepting tho ripping skirt, made In one lino from waiHt to shoo top, havo adopted tho (louucod skirl, which gives throe lines stretching around the figure.
mensely popular especially in sand color, which goes admirably with many strong colors in suits. These waists have loose sleeves and extended shoulder lines, however, which is not in keeping witU the period of our suits and frocks, and there is little doubt but that the almost tight basque, buttoned straight up the front with fabric buttons, with regulation armholes, set-in sleeves and high or low collar, is already the smart separate waist to use. If the plain fronts are not becoming then one can . adopt lengthwise wide puffs divided by silk cording which belonged to the 1S70 period, a style which looks quite modern as some women wear it. A blouse cut after this shape, made in satin or soft grosgrain silk fastened with velvet buttons in the same color, and finished at the neck with a turnover collar of lace or a high collar of the satin, contributes wonderfully well to the appearance of a cloth suit.
DICTATES OF FASHION Grays are coming in again. Seal brown is a fashionable color. Gored skirts are well thought of. The fuller a skirt is, the shorter it is apt to be. There is no lessening in the fondness for sashes. The new square meshed veiling is much liked. Small women and young girls favor short coats. For the evening waist little trimming is used. A great deal of gold ribbon is used on millinery. For the evening gown, flounces are most fashionable. Silver sequins are used upon white net in evening gowns. Prevailing styles among evening wraps are the cape effects.BROADCLOTH COSTUME . .-.-.v. Frock of sand-colored broadcloth with ball collar of white lawn and row of buttons down front of blouse and skirt. Girdle of black satin. FOR THE BEST APPEARANCE Beauty "Don'ts," Apparently Simple in Themselves, Yet Mean a Great Deal. IDon't frown. Your forehead will soon show permanent wrinkles if you make frowning a habit. Don't bolt your food. Take your time over eating and masticate your lood very carefully, if you want to keep your health and your looks. Don't adopt a stylo of halrdresslng that doesn't suit you, however smart it may be. Don't take too much tea'or coffee. Both should bo taken in moderation only. Don't eat starchy foods if you are Inclined to be stout. Remember that lemon Juice and all acids havo remarkably thinning properties. Don't go out on a windy day without first mublnjc a little face cream well into tho skin and, dusting tho face lightly over with powder afterward Don't wear tight shoes on shoes wilt ultra high heels If you wish to cultU vato a graceful walk. Don't wear white if you have a sallow akin, unless you can relievo it with a bright touch of color. Many Changes Possible. The woman who has a white satin or lace skirt for evening and a black cloth, serge, satin or silk for day wear is lucky. If those aro properly cut, all sorts of changes can bo rung on them with a dilTerent bodlco. so that tho wearer can bo drossod suitably for a club mooting, matinee, little dinner, or even a weekend gathoriug.

Single Dial of Chronometer Records It AIL Invention Both Mechanically Clever and Artistic Has Been Awarded a Patent by the Authorities at Washington. A chronometer, indicating on a single dial the time at any city in the world, was recently awarded a patent, according to Popular Mechanics. Odd Clock Which Shows the Time of Every Place in the World. The instrument consists of a globe of the earth inclosed in a glass dome, around the circumference of which is an hour and minute scale. Half of the characters are in white and the other half black, indicating day and night. The dome is so mounted that it revolves once every 24 hours, so that if it is desired to know the time at Paris, it is only necessary to follow a longitudinal line leading from the position occupied by that city on the globe to the dial. If the figure appears in white, the hour which it represents is that of day. A second dial at the base of the sphere shows the local time, although this could be read on the universal dial. Russia's Monster Aeroplanes. A good deal has been heard concerning the British and German aeroplanes, but the great Sikorsky biplanes used by the troops of the czar have been rather overlooked. These machines, invented by a famous Prussian named Sikorsky, are" by far the biggest aeroplanes being flown in the war in fact, they are the largest in the world. They stand 16 feet high, and are about 100 feet wide. The Sikorsky can carry almost as many passengers as an airship. Twenty men can be accommodated in the large passenger cabin, which is constructed of metal and contains numerous windows. In this machine three engines are fitted, which give a total of nearly 1,000 horsepower, for, owing to the Sikorsky biplane weighing in itself one and a half tons, and having so large a crew to carry, it demands high power to pull it off the ground and keep it in the air. The weight of the machine has necessitated an elaborate landing chassis, composed of numerous springs and pneumatic tubes, so that the huge biplane can alight safely on rough ground at a speed of GO miles an hour. i Mark Sullivan's Error. Mark Sullivan, editor of Collier's Weekly, was the speaker of the evening at a recent banquet given in Detroit by the Adcraft club. He was the last on the program. It was noticeable that Mr. Sullivan spoke very rapidly, though eloquently. His remarks were brief, and afterwards it was wondered by those who heard him why he didn't speak longer. "I omitted many things that 1 intended to say," said Mr. Sullivan to a friend afterwards. "Why?" the friend asked, "it was so late," answered Mr. Sullivan. "It wasn't very late," the friend replied, "and the audience was very anxious to hear you." "I looked at my watch when I got up," said Sullivan, "and it was a quartar to 12. At that hour no one should attempt to make a speech I" "Heavens, man!" exclaimed tho friend, "you've got eastern standard time. It was only a quarter of 11 when you started." Poor Comfort. Richard Croker, at a dinner at tho Democratic club, in Now York, said of the war: "lBverybody la telling the combatants In Europe what a regenerated world It will be after the war Is overno more armament linns, no moro conscription, no moro race rivalry. "But tho way they aro getting killed off, tho combatants must fool about all tuts consolation like Tim Grady, "Tim Orady lay In his slok bed groaning and moaning. M,Aro ye very bad, Tim?' asked his wife. " 'No,' said he. 'It's tho doctor I'm thlukin of. What a bill WW bo, to bo sure, to bo sure " 'Shuro, now, Tim said his wife. Walking Graveyards. Some of the Indian princes have given over two million dollars apiece to Britain for the war. Beside such gifts, the gifts of London business millionaires seem small. "In fact," said James Douglas, in an interview, "in fact, the gifts of the nizam of Hyderabad and the maharajah of Mysore and the gaekwar of Baroda give our English Merchant princes, who owe England so much more, a look of avarice; and you know the definition of avarice. "Avarice, like a graveyard, takes in all it can get, and never gives anything back." Starting the Day Wrong. There was gloom on the face of the farmer.
