In letters to the editor of the Public Press in 1909, Mr. W. E Cox gave assurances that he did not war t more than three terms and gave this paper permission to publish the same should helagain undertake to be a candidate Now what can tht people expect of him? Here is his own words, viz: Washington, July 8, 1909. "Permit me to say that I am thoroughly in accord with what you say-that I would be satisfied with three terms. "If you recall, on more tnan one occasion I have discussed this with you in your office and expressed these sentiments to you. The truth of the matter is I have always felt since I have been an aspirant for Congress, that three terms would suffice, so far as I was concerned. This is what I have said to more persons than you in the District, and I have never claimed that I wanted to succeed myself mere than three terms. To some three or four men in the past, 1 have said two i three times. 'Not to exceed three terms at the most' ,n this declaration I am still willing tu stand. (Si jned) Your Inend, VV E. COX. The in a letter dated two days lat Mr. Cox says: Washington, J lv 10, 1909. "You have by this time my lette concurring in your former article, which in the future, should I undertake to be a candidate, you are at perfect liberty to publish. My letter to yu records my sentiments in private conversations, in the past year to several fellows in tne District. (Signed) Respectfully your friend, W. E. COX. What do the voters of the Third District think of Mr. Co.x's promsies? Surely he has eliminated, for he is now asking for the fifth term. He will have drawn MO.OOO from the public treasury when his present term expires and it is surely up to him to show that he meant what ne said
