The station is a confusion of trains and the lovely blue lake a mere crowded pathwaj" for the white steamers which are f orgy er embarking or disembarking invading armies. It is amazingly easy to plan to visit. Lucerne, but it is almost unnecessary somehow you always find yourself there. And it is not worth while to plan not to come somehow you always find it pleasant to he there, in Cosmopolis. To some visitors Cosmopolis, as one sees it on the Schweizerhof of Quai, may seem to be too preponderantly German to deserve its name. But it is only fair to Lucerne to remember that in Switzerland, which lies at least adjacent, and in the town itself, which is even closer at hand,' is domiciled a very considerable German-speaking and indigenous population. Abstract the Swiss, and nowhere it iß probable, do the' nations of th-. world meet in such equal and such large numbers. Boston. A unique and striking memorial structure iß the new stone tower in the form of a lighthouse, erected at Vineyard Haven, Martha's Vine-
I yard, in memory of dead seamen of I the merchant marine, by the Boston
Seamen's Friend society. The tower is practically completed, although two bronze tablets, one bearing the dedication, and the other the names of the men buried in the shadow of the tower, have yet to be placed. The Boston Seamen'o Friend society maintains a Bethel at Vineyard Haven,
with a chaplain who has charge of both the spiritual and the physical welfare of the seafarers who put into port there. The chaplain, Madison Edwards, originated the idea of such a memorial five years ago. Funds to the amount of n.early $500 were collected from the seamei in the harbor, and the work was undertaken by Edwards' assistant, Austin Tower, who built the monument from specifications obtained from the TJ. S. lighthouse board. Mr. Edwards, in the Bethel boat, the Helen went to the islands of Naushon and Nashawena, nearby, for field stone of suitable size from the rocky hills. It is estimated that over 30 tons of small stone were brought across for the purpose. The trimmings are of granite. The work wras done by Mr. Tower in spare time, with the aid of Mr. Ed'

Berlin The municipality .of Berlin is following the example of three or
four other German cities and is mak
ing arrangements for obtaining a supply of radium and mesothorium, in view of the increasing importance which they are obtaining in the light against cancer. Directors of hospitals under the municipality have been asked to make detailed reports on the subject. While it is an undoubted fact that German medical authorities are growing more inclined to favor radium in their treatment of cancer, it must bo pointed out that none of them regards radium as an absolute cure, and that the greatest caution must still be used before any definite judgment can bo passed on its ofilciency. Professor Czerny, whose name is highest among cancer authorities, maintains that surgical operation in the early stages of the disease is superior to any other method of treatment and certainly gives the best prospect of permanent relief. The professors ia extremely cautious in his judgment on radium, whilo admitting that in certain stages of cancer and whore tho dlsenso can be easily reached radium unquestionably is a powerful pal liativo.

We all of us have days when nothing seems to go right. You have a feeling of utter depression come over you. Not because there is anything particularly the matter, but you're dissatisfied. So you sit in a desolate hump and wonder what's the good of anything especially yourself, and the little petty details of your life. t "Of what use am I after all?" you say to yourself. A kind of mental fog has taken hold of you and you are sitting in a mist, so to speak. Well, do you know what is the very best thing in the world for you to do? Get out of it quickly. Remind yourself that every one has these horrid moods, but every one can master them if they will only set to
work the right way. One of the best ways to cure yourself when you feel cross, or miserable, or .discouraged is to go and do something for somebody else. Never yield to a mood of idleness or fear, of depression or worry; the more
you think about these things the worse they become. Start doing some work that will employ all your physical energies and concentrate your mind on the subject in hand. If it's only making beds, make up your mind to do it with all your might. Of course, if you can go out for a good walk you have a sovereign cure, and a good many girls who go to the city would be better in health and spirits if they walked at least a part of the way to and from their offices. Depression is very often caused by ill health, and it's quite certain that if you continue in a mood of depression for any length of time you need a visit to the doctor. In moät cases depression is an ill just like neuralgia or headache. And if you find yourself getting blue
sometimes, don't riake too much of
it, don't, agonize about your "nerves' and so on. Give yourself, if you can, some little extra pleasure; take a girl friend out to tea; go and see a play. Never mind whether you feel in
clined or not, once you are there you will enjoy yourself thoroughly and go home feeling ever so much brighter and better for the little change of scene and thought. Anyway, when Uiere are so many nice things in the world, make up your mind that you won't lose any of the opportunities to help others and be happy by. dwelling in mental gloom. Chicago Tribune.

HOTELS HIS WAITING ROOM
St. Louia Rural Visitor Camps in Lob
bies of Big Hostelries to "Walt for Train."
St. Louis. A rural visitor from "near Jefferson City," six feet three inches tall, and imbued with a belated Labor day spirit and several other kinds of spirits, came to St. Louis, and like many other strangers went out for a stroll before train time. When he became tired ho walked into one of tho most fashionable hotels near Forest park and sprawled himself out for a rest in a rocker in the center of the lobby. 3y and by the clerk asked him for whom he was waiting, and the stranger replied "for a train." Tho clerk explained that trains did not pass tho hotel, and asked a policeman to direct the ruralito to tho Union station. An hour later guests iLt another largo hotel saw the stranger wiMc In, remove his shoes and scttlo down for a qulot sloop. Again a policeman was callod and again tho stmngor replied ho was "waiting for a train." This tlmo the policeman accompanied him on a etroot car to tho Union station. At tho station the stranger, still bllHsfully Ignorant of Ills mistakes, remarked: "Flno lot of stations you got In this town."
Lost One Powder Magazine. A day or two ago M. Hennion, the
prefect of police, was passing along a corridor in the prefecture, when he noticed an "agent" dozing, on a bench. "What are you doing there?" asked M.
Hennion, in a tone that effectually
wakened this subordinate. "Guarding the powder magazine," was the answer. "And where is the powder magazine that you are guarding so zealously?" was the prefect's next question. The policeman had to confess that he didn't know. M. Hennion organized a search, not with candles; one may be sure, for the elusive magazine. It was nowhere to be found. Finally, the oldest inhabitant of- the prefecture supplied the key to the enigma. The powder magazine was, it aoppeared, the name given to a lumber room in which a few rifles and pistols had been stored since 1875. M. Hennion, who has been sweeping very clean since his arrival at the prefecture, and is not without a sense of humor, has presented the venerable relics to the museum of the army. Essay on Hens, A school boy says in an essay: "Hens is curious animals; they don't havo no nose, nor no teeth, nor no ears. They swallow their wittles whole, and chew it up in their crops inside 'em. The outside of hens is generally put into pillars and into feather dusters. The inside of a hen Is sometimes filled with marbles and shirt buttons, and such. A hen is very much smaller than a good many other animals, but they'll dig up more tomato plants than anything that ain't a hen. Hens is very useful to lay eggs for plum-puddings. Hens havo got wings and can fly when they get frightened. 1 cut off a hen's head with a hatchet, and it frightened her to death.1'
