Subject to the decision of the Democratic primary May 9, 1912. For County Commissioner. Joseph A. Thomas Schnarr is a cincPdate for County' Commissio: 'Vom the 2d District of Duboib Cuuiuy. Subject to the Democratic Primary Bdayjm College Bred Presidents.
We have had in all twenty-five presidents f the United States. Twelve of them were collegebred; thirteen tf them were not college aradiates. Which of the groups of presidents were the stronger men, the better men. the best fitted to be president of the United States? We will leave it to our readers to judge for themselves. The college-bred presidents were: John Adams, John Quincy AdamsP W. H, Harrison, John Tyler James K. Polk, Franklin fierce, James Buchanan, K. B. Hayes, Jas. A. Garfield, Chester A. Arthur, Benjamin Harrison, Theo dore Roosevelt. The presidents who never graduated from a college were: Jas. Monroe, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, Zachary Taylor, Millard Filmore, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Jas Madison, Thomas Jefferson, . George Washington, U S. Grant Grover Cleveland, Wm. McKin ley. Of course there are strong men goed men, on both sides of the list. Np one will deny that. Bui 1 whiclj list, on the whole, represents the most strength of character and general horse sense? We have always contended that a college education has been ' greatly overestimated in the development of brains and character. With the exception of President Roosevelt, the college graduate presidents seem to us much the weaker list. In regard to President Roosevelt, he miffht have been a good student in the recitation room; but, it is our private opinion that he made a better athlete than linguist, and pent more time on the campus than in study. There art men, like Roosevelt, that can go through college and retain all of their self-reliance, individuality and commonsense; but, as a rule, the college education tends to produce pedantic jmrrota, who can quote standard muthori much better than they cam fyrak for themselves. We may bt wsöng, however.
