"Benefactor" Championship 8teer Recently Acquired by Purdue University.
The Purdue University agricultural extension department is finding a distinct fcaturo for their short course work nmong Indiana farmers this winter in their recent purchase of Benefactor, one of the most famous steers that America has known in many years. This animal has been capturing the choicest awards of tho various live stock exhibitc of tho country for the past three years, and promises to continue Its supremacy during tho coming seasons. Hcnefactor was recently purchased by the university for use at tho Farmers' Short Courses, and is now being taken, in a private stock car, to all towus where tho short courses are held. The steer was bred In 1909 by Tom-
son Brothers, of Dover, Kansas, who
are noted for their success In breeding high quality cattle. It was shown during the first two years by the Kansas Agricultural college, and as a calf It was proclaimed champion of the interstate show at St Josenh. Mo. It
also captured tho championship as a
shorthorn at tho American Royal live stock show at Kansas City, and was

Now Is tho time to prepare for a
season that is sure to arrive next
spring, a season when thousands of
Incubator chicks will die before they are three weeks old. Why do these baby chicks die? This question Is prevalent nmong most users of Incu
bators today.
There are many causes of death
among chicks. It may result from one
or several of these causes in any par
ticular case, the losses sometimes run
ning as high as 100 per cent There are two goneral classes of causes which result in the death of chicks; namely (1) specific organism as found in the contagious disease called "White Diarrhoea." (2) Condition affecting the chick before or aftor hatching. White Diarrhoea. Concerning the contagious dlscaso commonly called MWhIto Diarrhoea," Dr. O. B. Morse of tho U. S. Bureau of Animal Indu3-
! try, and Dr. L. F. Rettger and Prof.
F. II. Stoneburn -of the Connecticut Experiment station, have publlshod bulletins In which they state that this
' disease Is contagious and should be
treated as such, recommending the use of efficient disinfectants whenever the dlseaso occurs. Prevention. Seldom can a disease of poultry be profltnbly and effectively cured, but It can be prevented and when "White

declared champion shorthorn at tho International live stock exposition at Chicago. As a yearling, under tho control of the Kansas college, it took first prize as a shorthorn at tho Interstate show at St. Joseph, and waB declared champion, for the second time, at the American royal show. The international Judges awarded It second prize during tho same season. This year Benefactor has been accorded the championship of the shorthorns at the American Royal show, held in October, and tho title ot "Grand Champion Steer" at the Iowa state fair. The steer now weighs 1,700 pounds and Is an excellent type of shorthorn cattle. Ho Is especially smooth In flesh and Is considered an especially good type of feeding cattle. Benefactor will also prove as good a subject as could be found for stock judging, and the students taking the animal husbandry work at tho short courses are to be given an opportunity to score Benefactor among other animals to be taken for that purpose by tho extensionists.
j flock for 24 hours after giving tho Ep
som salts, so that excrement from the hens may be better treated with tho lime. This treatment should be repeated in two weeks and It may bo desirable to give It once a month during the breeding season. Before setting tho eggs laid by tho hens, thoy should bo treated, by dipping In as nearly pure grain alcohol as can be obtained. When tho temperature In the Incubator is correct and eggs ready to set, thoroughly disinfect, by spraying, tho Inside of the machine with some good coal tar dip, duluted one to 35 parts of water. Thus the "Whlto Diarrhoea" organIsms are driven from the Intestines o' tho parent hens, the shells or tho eggs are disinfected and tho Incubator Is made sanitary, reducing the chances fo. the chicks that are to be hatched, from becoming inoculated with tho fatal organitms. When tho chicks are batched, do not feed until 48 to GO hours old. Make brooder, etc., entirely sanitary by spraylug, keeping dry, and allowing plonty of sunlight This above mentioned treatment has been used by many experiment stations and large poultry farms with success. It Is advisable to use this method, whenever tho disease has occurred in tho past, accompanied by a thorough disinfection of land, etc Laud disinfection can best bo done by plowing or spading It up, exposing to sunlight and planting a quick growing crop. It would be still better to move the stock onto new land.

Strong, VIgorou Chicks. The Kind That Are Always Healthy. Diarrhoea" is fatal tho Incubator or parent stock should be inspected. Prevention Is by far tho best cure. Chicks that are "pasted up" behind, giving an appearance of "White Diarrhoea." may be affected with troubles duo to Improper brooding or feeding. When thus affected, tho troublo should not bo confused with the contagious dlseaso. Sanitation the Best Preventive. Tho following general plan can bo recommended for preventing "White Diarrhoea." First, put the parent hens in the best physical condition by cleaning out the Intestines. To do this give Epsom salts, ono teaspoonful to each threo adult liens, well mixed In a dry mixture of bran and shorts and afterwards moistened. On tho day following the giving of Epsom nails, thoroughly disinfect the premises by scattering plenty of air slaked lime oyer roosts, hen houso floor, and runways. If possible, contlne the
College Building Wrecked.' The tornado that swept over central Indiana recently demolished tho seed and fertllizor building of the agricultural -experiment station. Tho building was built about two years ago and the loss Is estimated at $10,00$. In addition to the loss of this building, a largo number of windows were destroyed In tho station building, and two sheep sheds, used in housing tho lambs for the experimenal work, were completely blown away. The tornado was one of the most destructive tbat Indiana has ever experienced.
To Broaden Their Views. The Academy of Agricultural Science Is a recent organization of Indiana experiment station men who meet bi-monthly to bronden their views of agricultural work. At the meetings a man from one of the various departments discusses sorao phase of tho work In his department. During this discussion many questions aro asked and tho specialist In another department has hls vIcwb broadened and Is" put In Couch with the work of tho station as a whole.
Experiments In Clover. Recent experiments at tho Indiana experiment station show clover to be worth $5 to $8 per aero In Increased crop yields when grown In rotation. Depending on the condition of tho soil, a conservative cstlmato of growIng a crop of clover in connection with corn and cereal crops would valuo tho Improvement duo to clover at from $5 to (12 per acre.
A FREQUENT QUESTION . SWERED.
AN
Wofitern Canada probably suffered loss from weather conditions during tho year of lfill than did almost any other portion ot tho country. Seeding was most successful and the growing conditions up to July were nev-r bettor Crops of all klnd3 showed wonderful growth at that tlmo and wero universally good, but there was not tho usually excellent ripening weather in August and the effects of this wero felt. Many fields that lato in July promised 40 and 50 bushels yield of wheat were reduced to 25 and 30 bushels, while some of course gave tho full expectancy and others somewhat less. The quality was also lowered. In face of theso conditions, it Is found that during the months of September and October, tho total amount of contract wheat marketed and Inspected was about 120 million bushels, which realized a total of 18 million dollars, tho average price for this wheat being 97 cents; that below contract for tho two months was a llttlo over 15 million bushels, which at an aver ago price of 89 cents per bushel realized a little over eleven million dollars, or a grand total for all wheat of 35 million bushels, which realized a total of a little over thirty-one million dollars. On tho first of November, thero was In tho hands of the farmers of Manitoba, Saskatchewan nnd Alberta for sale and seed about 130 million bushels of wheat, from which fact some idea may be had of tho valuo of the wheat crop of 1911. A careful canvass made hy tho Winnijwg Free Press made of a number of men fanning in a large way Indicates that even with tho extreme expense of harvesting tho crop, which has been caused by the bad weather and difficulty In threshing, wheat has been produced and put on the market for less than 55 cts. a bushel. The averago freight rate Is not over 13 cts. per bushel. This would make the cost ot production and freight CS cts. and would leave the farmer an actual margin on his low-grade wheat of 17 Vi cts. and for his high-grade wheat of l9'& cts.; and though this Is not as large a profit as tho farmer has every right to expect, It Is a profit not to be despised, and which should leave a very fair amount of money to his credit when all the expenses of the year have been paid, unless tho valuo of low-grade wheat sinks very miioh below Its present level.
