KEEP MOVING FORVARD. There are manj tiraes in the life of a person rho ,jiioc3 thbp thai .ire worth whilo when he gets terribly discouraged and thinks it easier to go hack than to push on. But there is no victory in retreating, says Orrison Swett Marden in Success Magazine. Wo should never leave any bridges unburned behind us, any way open for retreat to tempt our weakness, indecision ot discouragement. If there is anything we ever feel grateful for, it is that we have had courage and pluck enough to push on, to keep going jwhen things looked dark and when .seemingly insurmountable obstacles 'confronted us.

IS 'HUMAN VACUUM CLEANER

Amanda's Economies In Line of Good Housekeeping Hise a Screw L0060 Long before theintroduction of the vacuum cleaner Amanda had achieved by sheer persistence of arm, the energetic wielding of broom and brush, the precise results accomplished by this excellent invention. Her husband whimsically complains that the house is always in process of renovation and seldom is a condition which can be considered comfortable and livable, but he is a mere man and little can be expected of him. Of course, Amanda is ill from time to time, usually as the result of doing more than she ought. She-has headaches, backaches and nerves that are on edge. ITer sons elip out of tho house in tho evening because they prefer to be where they are not reproved if they draw a chair from its place or leave a newspaper on tho floor. ITer daughters enjoy visiting much more than staying at home, and her maid seldom remains longer than a week or two. She had nineteen successive maids in a single season. Somehow Amanda's economies in the line of good housekeeping have a screw loose. She observed one day that she sympathized with ttio women who liked to have her house perfectly ordered and who then wished that she could take hex family and live in the barn so that the house need not be disturbed. Margaret E. Sangster, in Christian Herald.

Do It the First Thing After You Wake In the Morning. A splendid thing for the body is stretching. When you first wake up in the morning, take a good, long stretch: Stretch the hands as far out sideways as possible. Then stretch them over the head as far as 'OU can reach, and at the same time stretch the feet downward as far as you can. i?aise the feet and stretch upward just as high as you can, and then lower the feet and legs very slow 1 v. tion. Stand on the right foot and stretch the right arm forward and upward as high as you. can, while at the same time the left foot is raised from the floor and stretched outWard, and the left hand is stretched backward and downward. This is a fine exercise for the whole body and is especially good for the waist and

hips, making them firm and strong. , ry

standing on me leu loot this exercise can be reversed. If you have been sitting in the same position for a long time reading, studying, writing or sewing and the muscles have become tired and cramped, tho best tiling to do is to

! get up and stretch. Stretch the

arms upward and outward and forward and backward. Lift the shoulders as high as you can and drop them. Expand the chest and breathe deeply, or, sitting in the chair, stretch the hands upward, lift the feet from the floor and stretch them forward as far as possible, any way so -ou give the muscles a good, vigorous 6tretch.

When one is very tired, these is'

nothing more restful than stretching the muscles and then relaxing. Exchange.

SOCIAL INFLICTIONS.

I have seen men who neigh like a horse when you contradict them or say something they do not understand ; then the overbold, who make their own invitation to vour hearth : v 7 the persevering talker, who gives you his society in large, saturating doses; the pitiers of themselves a perilous class; the frivolous Asmodeus, who relies on you to find him in ropes of sand to twist; the monotones; in short, every stripe of abfiirditv those are social inflictions which the magistrate cannot cure or defend vou from, and which must be intrusted to the restraining force of custom, and proverbs and familiar rules of behavior impressed on vonnsr neonlc in their school' ilavs. Emerson.

Illuminating Gas. In the Philosophical Transactions of the Koyal Society of London for 1739 is printed a letter, written in 1G91, in which the Rev. John Clavtor details a series of experiments he made in distilling coal in ti retort, showing not only that lie had observed the inflammable gases evolved, but that he had collected and stored them for some tia in bladders. In 1787 Lord Dundonald made gas from coal, with which he lighted the hall of.,Culross abbey. In 1792 Robert Murdoch began the experiments which resulted in the establishment of coal gas as an illuminating agent. In 1797 he publicly showed the system he had matured, and in 179S, being employed in the factory of Uoulton & Watt, Birmingliam, he fitted up an apparatus for the manufacture of gas in that establishment, with which it was lighted. This was the first use of illuminating gas except by way of experiment.

A Vain Precaution. Lord Talbot De Malahidc was talking in New York about the thoroughness of the customs investigations. "The smuggler," he said, "is bound to be detected. If he tries his little game in your metropolis. Tho smuggler's precautions against detection at this admirably-managed port aro as vain and ludicrous as the precautions of the dreaming Irishman.
