PANADA'S IMMENSE WHEAT FIELDS
THE ATTRACTION FOR THREE TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILWAY3. Last August thero visited tho Canadian west tho vice-president of tho largest Individual hardware company In tho United Stat03. Aa hla firm havo a turnover of millions, and deals extensively with farm Implements, this man took a deep Interest In crop conditions in Canada, and on his return he embodied his findings In an article for tho Hardware Reporter. This article should bo of special Interest to farmers. Tho writer speaks of tho Importance of tho spring wheat crop of Western Canada. He might also have spoken of the Importance tf tho oat crop and also of the winter wheat crop, as well cs barley. Winter wheat during tho past, few years has been a great success, and experiments have shown that It can be grown with success In almost any portion of the three prov
inces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. But apart from this, tho eprlng wheat crop Is the one generally grown, and all who know anything of grain, anyone who has had anything to dc with markets, knowa or has heard of the high character of this cereal and th splendid yields that are annually. prod .iced. Reproducing from this article: "In a lani of such great sweep, and of such diffeiencc in soil and climate, there aro mai:y resources, but nono are at present of. tho same overwhelming importance as the spring wheat crop. In tho Interminable pralrio stretches of tho northwest provinces it is the ono absorbing topic of Interest and of conversation during its growing and its harvesting, for upon its success or failure hangs the weal or woe of a large part of the Dominion. Its influence extends far down into the United States, drawing thousands of farmers northwards with tho lure of cheap lands, but likewise beyond the great lakes, even to the easy going maritime provinces, calling the flower of their young men to its opportunities. Development in these prairie provinces goes on at high pressure for everything hangs on the outcome of spring wheat. Success has emboldened the raisers of this ono allimportant crop, and each year thero is further incursion into those northern fields that only a short time ago were regarded as Arctic wastes. Tho Canadian Northwest seems to be one of those modern agricultural examples Eet forth to drive the final nail In tho collln of that ancient Malthusian delusion that population tends to outrun tho means of subsistence, since the only fear now among Canadian economists Is as to tho danger of overstocking the wheat market. Only about two and one-half per cent of possible arable lands in tho northwest provinces is now under cultivation, nnd this year tho crop promises to be close to 200,000,000 bushels, so that your Imagination and your arithmetic can easily supply the answer as to the possiblo or even probable outcome." During the months of July and August the weather was unfavourable nnd the production of a 200 million yield of wheat will not likely be realized, but even with this, the threshing reports coming to hand show that the crop will be a splendidly paying one.

Such a get-up Is given for a girl of 10 in the illustration, plain bluo cloth and n pretty wool In two shades of bluo being used. An entire suit of bluo sergo would bo very good and practical in this model, whose collar permits, i( liked, tho stylish finish at tho back. Tho draped turban the girl wears Is a suitable headpieco for tho suit and it follows ono of tho fads of the moment in using a bit of tho skirt stuff for a 6ldo trimming. FRINGE MUCH IN EVIDENCE
Fad That Is Being Carried to Extremes Used on Every Kind of Outer Garment,
Frinpe and tnssols now aro tho fad. They go with every sort of dress, coat, hat, parasol or umbrella. Thero Is fringe of every color and shade, designed to harmonlzo with the gown and to add to the general effectiveness of milady's toilet. The uso of fringe is so great that modistes are put to their wits' end trying to deviso original ways of using IL The fringe Is put on skirts and tunics. It Is Introduced on bodices. Thero are rows of It on the sleeves and across the back. It is sewn lengthwise and crossways on tho fan, consisting of a thick cluster of long velvet fringe, which half conceals tho small fan ranging from the waist. There are enough ways of using fringe to dazzle tho ordinary man, but woman seems to know just how to make use of yards and yards of it, regardless of the expense. Umbrellas havo more tassels than ever.
MOST USEFUL OF POCKETS
Compartment In Under-Sklrt May De Classed as Necessary Part of Costume.
Doubly useful Is tho undcr-skirt pocket at holiday times, as In It may be safely carried the necessary money for traveling expenses, nnd also perhaps a small quantity of Jewelry. Tho ordinary under-sklrt pocket Is often so badly designed as tf shape nnd fIzo that while being worn It Is frequently visible In a none too pretty
days for trimming? Almost everything la seen, and with a little taste and finger cloverness anybody can copy somo of tho most distinctive French garnitures. For example, a stunning black wool dress Been recently showed a collar of white cloth treated to a mysterious edgo which turned out to bo no moro than coarso black wool crocheted on. Tho edgo was directly worked on tho cloth a llttlo lattice design and below this a single row of bright green wool, caught down with bl&ek, was a lovely finish. Aside from tho importance of the hat, nothing smartens up a stylish tailored get-up llko a handbag of harmonious and distinctive sort, and hero lies tho, greatest opportunity for homo taste and dainty work, for the bags are mado of every conceivable texture and tho moro home-mado they look tho moro charming they seem. Somo neat llttlo envelopo shapes, not very big. but with cord and tassel of silk, aro 90 cents. Theso are in suedo and dressed leather, and they look quite elegant with tho simpler suits. Heavy gloves and a good umbrella kept neatly folded when not In uso in Its snug caso aro other requirements for the tailored rig, and ono of the stunning colors of tho day for both of these is tho smoky gray already discussed. Tho approved gloves are of buckskin and of English make, holding tho hand rather loosely, and in grays and rich yellows. ' A

Hygienic Bathroom. An old bathroom may be almost made over with unlimited whlto enamel paint The woodwork, floors and wall may all bo painted, even the inside of an old tub. Before painting the tub. It Is necessary to bo absolutely sure that the tin is entirely freo from grease; otherwise the enamel will soon crack off; In f act, two or three coats should be given it as a foundation for tho enamel. Entirely apart from tho plumber's bill, a complete ouf.t for a bathroom may be bought for from slxty-Ilvo to one hundred dollars, including a porcelain enameled tub. Cheaper outllts may be bought, including the painted iron tubs. This estimate includes tho small appointments. Harper's Bazar.
Heavy Laces Popular. Heavy linen laces are far ahead of other kinds In the race for popularity. Tho designers have turned to history for ideas, and some very antique and charming patterns are shown in Venise lace or in the broad bands of Irish. Ily the way, now that Irish lace manufactured in this country Is called Irish, this lovely trmiming will be more In demand than ever. Formerly it had to bo mado in Ireland to win any appreciation, though our American product was every bit as good. Jackets, hat crowns or brims aro being mado ot it, handbags wo have had for a long time, but a new and pleasing Idea Is to combine Irish and Venise in ono article.
White Gaiters Are Worn. The woman who has pumps and does not wish to get high shoes until lato in the winter can now uso ber cloth gaiters and be very much in style. White ones are qulto tho fashion, and their rivals aro pearl gray. Those aro worn with tho black shoes with all kinds of gowns that
arc short and for the street
way. Wo give, therefore, a sketch ot a very neat llttlo pocket of this kind, which Is suspended by straps to a narrow waist-band, fastening with a small buckle, and which should be made In not too large a slzo. It Is fitted with two pockets with fold-over llaps, one above the other, the upper one fastening with two buttons and buttonholes, and tho lower with ono button and buttonhole. A glanco at the sketch shows so clearly the way In which tho pockets aro arranged that further description
is scarcely necessary, but it may be useful to add that Italian cloth or chamois leather would be sultablo material In which to carry It out, and the fold over flaps to the pockets should be bound at the edgo with nar. row ribbon, as also the sides.
