Feed the Foal So as to Produce Plenty of High Quality Bone, Muscle and Nerves.
Our object In the feeding and caro
of the colt should be to securo a sturdy body, hard, strong bono, and an active, vigorous disposition. In other words, wo want the largest and strongest development possible at ma
turity. Without tho liberal uso of sultablo feeds in combination with
senslblo caro and management this re
sult will bo Impossible.
To stimulate rapid growth and tho
strongest development, tho young colt
should bo given tho opportunity of eat
ing dry food at an early age. When one month old ho will usually exhibit
an interest In his mother's feed box at meal time. A guod way to encourage tho colt to eat is to place the mother's reed box low enough for tho youngster to reach. In a short timo his capacity will demand a separate trough and an individual ration.
The demands of tho colt are large
ly Tor bone and muscle and nervo building material. It Is Impossible to grow tough reet, flinty bone, and strong elastic musclo upon corn and timothy hay alone, especially when
exerclso and pastures are not what
they should bo. Prior to weaning the
maximum supply of tho mother's milk should be sought by Judgment in her work and a plentiful supply of good oats and a llttlo bran. If the energies of tho mother are conserved as much
as possible and If sho Is naturally a
good milker wo have tho most Import
ant conditions for rapid growth In tho colt Add to this about all tho oats
tho colt will clean up twice or throo times a day, with access to a grass
paddock, and tho results should bo most ravorable. Corn should bo red In very small quantities, If at all. It tends more to fattening than to growth. Tho best results aro usually obtained
when oats, bran and timothy hay con
stitute the main reliance. In tno nb-
senco or bran a handful or oil meal
will bo round very desirable. A llttlo
salt should Jo supplied two or thrco times per week, or better still, mado
constantly accessible.
The amount or grain to supply tho
colt before and after weaning should bo determined by tho appetlto and condition of tho colt No more should
be given than will bo cleaned up promptly. No harm will come from
allowing tho young colt hay at will.
though It Is usually wise to limit this
part or tho ration when older, espe
cially l he has a tendency to overgorge. Liberal grain reeding should bo con-
Iniiod until tho colt is well estab
lished on pasture the succeeding sum
mer. Grain Is nover used more profit
ably than when led to a well-bred
colt. Good feeding alone, however.

Fighting Borers.
Scientists havo discovered a proven
tlvo for borers and protection against rodents. Borers, mlco and rabbits havo caused tho loss of millions or
dollars to rrult growers In this coun
try in recent years.
Tho remedy Is vory simple apply
a rairly thick mixture or pure white lead and puro raw Unseed oil to tho

Tho Idea ot painting trees with white lead and linseed oil originated
with Professor Allwood or tho Virginla state experiment Btatlon, who recommended It to keep mice and rabbits rrom gnawing the succulent bark or the young rrult trees.
Killing Cherry Slugs. Tho llttlo slug, hair snail and half worm, which consumes tho leaves or cherry and pear, and sometimes applo trees, leaving but the skeleton framework of tho leaves, can ho easily killed by spraying tho lnrccted trees with commercial arsenate or lead at tho rate or 2 pounds to 60 gallons of water. If it is more convenient to uso parls green, about five ounces should bo used to tho samo quantity or water, a llttlo freshly slaked lime
being stirred In to prevent a posslblo

Setting Out Small Fruits. Apples, pearB, hardy grapes, black berries, currants, gooseberries and pot
rrown strawberries may bo set out
with perfect Buccess in tho fall during tho last weeks of Octohor nnd the llrst
weeks of November, according to the
climate.
