PROFITJN SHEEP Feeder Sheep and Lambs Are Now Cheap.
GOOD MONEY IN PROSPECT A Self-Evldent Proposition. Good growing Block of any kind that Is selling below too coat of production is always a Bafo Investment, If tho purchaser Is prepared to tako good caro of It. Ho who buys and develops nuch stock Is almost certain to mako n good profit In doing so, bocauso production will not long contlnuo at a loss, while consumption of Btaples must go on steadily. Not mroy others aro buying such stock, or else It would not bo selling bo cheaply, and It follows logically and consistently that whon it hna -been grown and finished for market, .thero will then bo a coinparatlvo scarcity of such finished stock and such good prices will bo realized for It that n handsomo profit will result from i tho deal. This reasoning Is self-evident, and f applies with especial emphasis to the ! present situation in feeder sheep and lambs. Last year's conditions aro now reversed. Then nearly everybody was crazy to feed sheep and lambs, and an immenso number were sold and shipped to tho country at about tho highest prices on record. This together with an enormous corn crop of high feeding value, a world of perfectly cured roughago and n splendid winter feeding season wero factors that combined to produco a heavy supply of fat sheep and lambs for market during tho early part of this year, whllo retailers of meats held up prices to consumers, so that consumption was limited, with tho natural and logical result of low prices and feeders' losses In most instances. In consequence of last year's un profitable experience and present scarcity of grass and hay, most farmers and many professional feeders of Bheep and lambs aro now avoiding tho market, and very few aro being shipped to tho country, whllo prices aro tho 'lowest sinco 1004. In fact, feeder sheep and lambs aro selling on tho market today for less than tho cost of production. These facts mean that early next year thero will .bo a scarcity of fat sheep and lamb3 at market, and comparatively high prices will prevail. Thoso who have tho nervo to go contrary to tho crowd and Invest in good, thin but thrifty feeder sheep and lambs at tho present low prlco, will havo no cause to regret their enterprising Independence when they como to market them In finished condition, Tho concensus of opinion of tho beet minds in tho trado Is that since both prices for feeding Btock and prospects for fat stock aro much better than they wero last year, therefore the opportunities for profit aro correspondingly better. In fact, the wholo situation 13 tho reverse of last year. Now 13 tho time to buy, becauso rango conditions cro such that most of tho sheep and lambs will come to i market from tho rango regions ready for slaughter, whllo fewer of tho feed er classes will bo marketed during tho ! remainder of this year, and the supply .will not equal tho probabfo Fall demand, so that prices are likely to bo materially higher In October and November. Practical Illustration. To shorten a long Sunday afternoon for Fred, aged eight, his mother told Jhlm that ho might Illustrate the twen-jty-lhlrd Psalm in any way ho chose. Quiet reigned for a time, as Fred, busy with pencil and pad, drew "shepherd" and "green pasture," "rod and staff." Thea a silence ensued, followed by a noisy clatter which brought his mother to tho room. Fred was busily nrranging a train of cars, a toy gun, marbles, etc., on tho table. "What aro you doing, Fred?" "Why," he answered, "theso are the presents of my enemies." A Trifle Withered. In hla native tonguo no one could havo made more graceful speeches than Monsieur Blanc, but when bo essayed compliments In English he was not qulto bo successful. "Havo I changed In tho five yenrs since wo met in Paris?" asked tho elderly woman who desired above all things to bo thought younger, much younger than sbo was. FALL PLANTING THEJ3RCHARD By 5L W. RICHARDS, llorilcultaril IVjurtrarst. PurJue i'.xprimrnt Station Purdue Uoorrtltr Agricultural Extrusion Fall Is, perhaps, ho best time for tho genornl farmer to set his orchard.
At this Eoason of tho yoar farm work Is gonorally slacker than in tho spring and tho work can thus bo given moro cure and attention. Tho treos should bo ordered early. If you wait until lato lu the season you npt to got cull Btock. Order from sorao good, rellablo firm that Is located somewhere near homo. If tho stock Is then unsatisfactory tho nurseryman Is close enough to bo dealt with. Hut only trees of standard varieties. Let tho ether man or tho experiment stations do tho experimenting For a homo orchard, two Fig. 1 Planting board. By means of this board the exact location of the trees can be determined after the holes are dug. or threo trees of about five varieties of each sort of fruit will bo found to be a great plenty. This will make an orchard of from an aero to an acre and ono half in slzo and will pro duco moro than enough for a family of average size. Before the trees arrive the ground should bo well fitted. Plow tho or chard area well and thon harrow It and leavo the soil in as good condition as if you wero going to sow wheat. Just as soon as tho trees nrrlvo they should be taken from tho boxes and havo their roots puddled. This is done by making a thin mixture of clay and water and then plunging tho root systemsof tho trees Into It. Puddling Is dono to prevent too rapid drying out of the roots. For tho farm orchard tho squaro system of planting will bo found to be very satisfactory. Tho treos aro set at tho corners of squares 35 or 40 feet on a side. On a small area tho trees can be Bet with a garden line. On a small area the trees can Fig 2 Apple tree being set with planting board. Stretch the lino tight and then place a stake every forty feet. Now movo tho line over forty feet, stretch again and set tho stakes as boforc. Contlnuo this operation until there aro as many Btnkes located as thero nro trees to bo planted. Each stako thus ropreProper Feeding. Avoid that which contains a largo proportion of fat. It is lean meat which gives tho best results. It is Bafo to say that cut bono and meal make a cheaper ration than grain because less is required to satisfy the hens, and nlso becauso in many places thoso substances cost less per pound than grain. If tho hens have a grass plot they will need but one good meal a day. If they are not now laying tho probability Is that they are too fat, which happens frequently when grain Is fed to liberally. Driving Bees From Grapes. It Is said that mignonctto makes honey equal to the best white clover and somo take advantage of this fact where bees arc likely to Injure the grapes. A row of mignonette Is put In tho ground near tho grnpes, and they will bloom at the Bamc time ns the grapo3. Tho bees will noglect the grapeB for the flower which they prefer. No Excuse for Surplus Males. Dou't carry a lot of surplus malo birds. Ar soon as tho hatching seasou Is over Bell them, If they aro purebreds, or out thorn If they arc not. Unmntcd hens lay as well aa mntcd oues, nnd Infertile eggs do not spoil In summer as soon as they get warmed up "to DO dogrcec, u? fertilo ones do. Remedy for Bowel Trouble. Piowcl trouble Is common In tho chill days of spring and fall, when change of temperature Is hard to prevent In tho house. Ton drops of spirits of camphor in drinking water dally Is a good remedy for such ailment. Cultivation Forestalls Drought. Do not neglect to cultivate tho sweet potatoes. Keep up tho cultivation nnd maintain tho mulch. If this Is proporly done they will stnnd a terrific drought nnd develop potatoes when the lato summer rains come.

which will stand forty foot each way In order to set the treo In tho exact plnco occupied by tho stake, a slmplo duvlco has been designed known as tho planting board (Flg. 1). This Is a ploco of board about six feet long with n notch In tho middlo and a holo in ench end. Tho board is laid on tho ground with tho stnko fitting In tho contral notch. Two other stakes aro now placed In tho end notches and driven In place. The planting board can now bo lifted from tho iuarkor stake, the stnko removed and tho hole dug. "Whan tho holo Is dug the plant ing board is replaced over tho end stakos and tho contral notch now rests over the holo In tho same place as tho original marker stako. Tho treo is then hold In tho centrnl notch (Fig. 2) and tho soil plnccd about lis roots. Caro should be taken to cut off all mangled and broken roots and to also shorten In all extra long ones. Tho soil should be thoroughly worked around tho roots and no air spaces left in contact with them. When the Fig. 3 Two-year-old apple tree. In the spring this fall set tree should be pruned at the black lines. This severe cutting back restores balance of top and roots. tree Is planted the board Is removed and tho tree now occupies the exact position of the marker stake. By using the planting board on each tree, the rows of trees can bo kapt as straight as was tho original lino of marker stakes. No top pruning should ho done to fall planted trees until tho following Bprlng when tho tops should be cut back severely. (Fig. 3) By careful work a fall planted orchard can bo brought through tho winter in good shape and at least two weeks gained in growth over spring planted trees. Plant carefully and then care for the trecSj If a satisfactory harvest 13 expected. Watch Poults Carefully. From the time of hatching tho llttlo poults must be carefully watched, as disease among them must bo nipped at the very start. Should a llttlo poult's wings droop he should at onco be isolated and given two grains of bromide of potassium In milk, and ho should bo kept Isolated until wholly well. For a cofd In tho head this breeder advocates tho spraying of the noso with kerosene. Light Feeds for the Poults. After tho young turkeys nro sixteen to twenty days old begin to feed light ly on cracked corn, wheat, etc.. and occasionally baked cornmeal or Johnny cake, which Is simply cornmoal mixed with either sweet skim milk or water and a very llttlo salt, and thoroughly baked. This is moistened slightly oeroro leedlng. Danger of Overfeeding. Remember there is tho samo danger of feeding too much meat feeds and green bono that thero is in overfeeding of corn or any other feed, liest results are obtained by feeding sparingly at first and never feeding nny more than ono-flfth as much of both of theso feeds as grain given. ' Good Laying Ducks. i Indian Runner ducks bear tho same relation to the duck family ns the Leghorns or Hamburgs do to tho poultry family and one drako to sovon or eight ducks is tho proper mating. Severe Pruning for Tree. It Is Imposslhlo to transplant a treo without losing from one-half to twothirds of Us fcodhig roots; bonce tho trees should receive a sovcro top pruning. Gander for Breeding. Tho length of time a gander Is useful for breeding purpose depends entirely upon tho Individual fowl. Some ganders aro useful for such purposes for eight to ton years and evou longer

L Eggs Cooked iir the Hot Springs of Mexico. Heated Waters Have Deen Known for Their Medicinal and Curative Properties Since Country Was First Explored. Candolarln, Mcx. Quo of tho most remarkable groups of hot springs In tho world Is situated on tho cxlcan side of tho Rio Qrando near bore. Thoro aro scores of theso bubbling streams of water llowing from tho rock , formation and into a gulch that empties into tho Rio Grande. Tho waters of theso springs havo been known for their medicinal and euratlvo properties from tho tlmo of tho first exploration and settlement of Mexico. Thousands of afllicted peoplo havo made'" pilgrimages to this remote region and sought tho benefits of tho thermal springs. Notwithstanding tho fact that they aro situated In an nlmost Inaccesslblo locality and can only bo reached by nn overland journey of moro than 50 miles from tho nearest railroad point thero is nover a tlmo that health Beckers may not be found camping at the place. Thoro aro no accommodations at tho springs for visitors and many are tho primitive and crude devices that are rigged up to obtain tho benefit of the waters. Frequently visitors construct crude adobe rooms over ono of tho springs and use them for swent boxes. Tho bath tubs usually consist of digging a holo In tho ground and letting it fill with tho hot water, tho health Eeeker taking his outdoor bath In that water perhaps a canvass for a canopy to keep out tho blazing sun. There Is not such a thing as a hotel or oatlng house within mnny miles of tho place. The visitors must bring their own supplies nnd live next to na ture during their stay, whether it be brief or greatly prolonged. The waters of theso springs are said to be good for many chronic Ills. That a great number of cures that aro little short of marvelous have taken place as a result of drinking and bathng In them Is a matter of common Cooking In Nature's Kitchen. knowledge to the people of tho border section. Ono of the phenomena of tho group of springs is that water having a temperature as high as 188 degrees may bo flowing from a crevice In tho rock at ono point, and within two or threo feet of It another stream of water of a tempcraturo of less than 100 degrees. Most of tho water, however. Is very hot, Uiat of the different springs ranging in temperature from 110 to 188 degrees Fahrenholt. This hot wa"ter, where It empties Into small pools, is used for cooking purposes by the campers almost to tho exclusion of fire. Kggs aro cooked In bIx to eight minutes, and by placing beans in the springs over night they are thoroughly dono by morning. Ono of the In toroBtlng and picturesque Bights of tho place Is the cooking operations of tho campers. Meat is also cooked In this manner. In the days when the Comanche and other tribes of Indians roamed through West Texas theso hot springs were used by them as nature's sanitarium for tho sick members of tho different tribes. The older inhabitants of this region well remember that In the earlier days there was nover n tlmo that a group ot Indian tepees were not located nt tho springs.
