Mind you, we; said JUST us well, because you'll have to put a force pump on either to blow them out and a 3 inch pipe will squirt farther than a 12 inch with the same presure. The town may need 8, 10 and 12 inen bewers WU years from now but not to-day There arc two petitions being circulated for and against- We are told that Uoss George has declared that he will vote for Sewers regardless of petitions; and we see where he was wise' in refusing to submit the ques-J tion to the voters as the proposi-! tion would have had as much J show of carrying as a snow hall does of freezing in Topet. A Junketing Spree At Jasper's Expense. The town trustee ; met in spec
ial session Wednesday niarht and ordered a sewer laid from MeCrillus street on 4th, to Mill to be 18 inches, on Mill to 3d, St. to be 24 inches, on Mill from 3d, to Patoka to be 30 inches in diameter. Then they appointed a committee to go to B'oomington, Bedford ad Mt. Carmel to investigate the Sewer question. You will notice the towns are4 'dry" so the committee will have to carry its "booze along." And if its expenses are as large as some investigating committees it will cost the town about $75.00 a day The committee is composed of Dr. J. P. Salb. Jos. F. Friedman, Peter Huther, John E' McKali, W. S Hunter and Geo. R Wilson a majority of whom are sewer men. You know what the report will be on the 19th, even if the sentiment of the citizens are overwhelmingly against the sewer proposition. Then again we can think that the appointment of this committee is an effort on the part of the trustees to crawl out ot a hole and saddle tne blame on an appointed committee. Sic'em. WITCHCRAFT IN ENGLAND. Tho Last of the Judicial ProMcutions end Executions. Sir Matthew Hale, it is true, had hanged two poor women at Cam bridge in 1664, but a lew years later Lord Chief Justice Holt set himself strongly against such charges and in every case tried beforo him directed the jury to bring in a verdict of acquittal. In a celebrated trial at Guildford in 1701 not onlv was the supposed witen lound r guilty, but her fabe accuser, John Hathaway, was condemned to a year's imprisonment and to stand in the pillory three times. Yet, horrible "to relate, a woman named Hicks and her daughter, a child of nine, were hanged together at Huntingdon on July 28, 1716, for raising a storm of wind in league with tho devil. The last judicial sentence for witchcraft in England was in 173G, one Jane Wenham being actually found guilty, according to the indictment, of "conversing familiarly with tho devil in the form of a cat." Tho judgo, however, procured a reprieve for poor old Jane, and she was ultimately released, to end her days in peace. Laat, the witchcraft act was repealed for the United Kingdom in the same year. It was quite time, for only nine years earlier, in 1727, a woman was brought beforo Captain David Pioss, deputy sheriff of Sutherland, charged with "causing her daughter to be shod by the devil." and so making her lame both in hands and feet.
