Fruit as Medicine.
Apples, pears anu quinces are a'l members of a bontanical fam-
ilv that includes the roses and is
scientifically known aspyrus ma
lus Incidentally, the apple has a wider range of growth than any other fruit, and the United States
is the largest grower of any
country in the world. Kip2 apples eaten raw and thoroughly masticated, are excellent for di
gestive troubles.
The pear shares the medicinal
qualities just recited, and in addi
tion, is somewhat more easily
digested by weak stomachs than
is the apnl; I he quince is only
used in the form of preserves, as
a rule It is saul that owing to
its fxecsi-ive astringeney when raw. it u employed by the peas
antry of Europe to stop hemorr
hages by placing slices of it on
wounds.
The curative powers of the grape ate established facts, as
th1 history f the "cures" in
which the vine plays the chief
part, testifies. Rhubarb, owing to the large
proDor;io of oxalic acid that it
contains, is a capital anti-scorbutic In the case of minor forms of scurvy, it acts as a curative. The young plant, when stewed
and eaten at breakfast, is of great assistance to the constipated. lts laxative qualities in general are
well known. Bananas should be us?d with caution by the constipated. The fig possesses laxative powers of a high order. This is also true of dates and tamarines. Peaches, apricots nnd nectarines have marked laxative effects. The plum, greengage, damson, and so forth, all have medicinal qualities. Blackberries, raspberries, huckleberries and most other berries act as olood purifiers and laxatives. From Physical Culture for July. Old Pnpera the Courier office 5c per package of 25.
John Anderson and John Parsons got into a fight at Cuzco Tuesday over a pile of wood. It seems that Parsons has a saw mill on Anderson's farm and they got into a dispute which resulted in Parsons attacking Anderson with a canthook and Anderson hit him over the head with a hame stick. Anderson
