One of the Most Interesting of Phenomena on Record.

.Near the hank of the Guadalupe t rivor 1 saw something green upon ' the fTOund and, hurrying forwards found a lovely tine Wlth leaves' malJer than those of the sinilax. 1 of a pale, tender green. The vine hud its root about five feet from the trunk of a towering cot ton wood tree and spread out on the ground

iour or nte miiu-s wide, bcotnnig n little narrower as it approached the tree. 1 could see no stems or! tendrils, so thick was the growth,1 and as J drew ch-e to the tn e I saw that the vine branrhed imt Wo,

As I stood intently watching the'l f

delicate, graceful vine, J Wame aware that it was pervaded bv a curious, tremulous motion. Then. I saw that the individual leaves were not stationary. Picking up a twig from the ground, 1 touched ono of the leaves and found to rav amazement that there was a hroun

ant under it about as long as mv little finder nail. Each leaf wa held in the mandibles of an ant in

such a way as to conceal the body of the insect, and the ants were rominrr

from the Run. But here, on the banks of a Texas river, I had found

a colony of them, shading themßelves where there vrn nn cn nrA

of green.

Charmed at the sight, I turned back to call my companions, who were fishing in he river. Within a

j few yards I met my husband coming i to look for me. He was even more excited over the phenomenon than I was and shouted for the others to come quickly. On investigation we found that the spot where the vine eeemed to have its root was really the opening of the ant nest. The tiny creatures had by some instinct learned that the topmost branches of the rottonwood had put out their first small leaves. They had climned the immense distance and hud cut oil and brought down their, leaves to feed their young ones, we supposed. The ants which issued empty jawed from the nesti made a long circuit to the farther , side of the tree and climbed up where they would not interfere witl the leaf bearing thousands coming down.
