Poultry can bo made to pay a much larger return on moat farms with good winter management, since tho fowls consume much food that would otherwise bo wasted. During the summer farm poultry keeping is comparatively easy, and tho fowls earn a good llving and glvo profitable re tun in growth mid eggs, but during the winter periods the farm Jlock Is often poorly cared for and roturns aro far loss than thoy should bo under slightly improved methods. A small flock, rightly managed, will lay moro eggs than several hundred hens allowed to roam free, hunting for their living with the exception of an occasional feed of whole corn or table, scraps. When laying hens crowd into draughty stables or under the corn crib for shelter, tho egg crop Is bound to be short. Colony House System. Tho best poultry house for the averago farmer is a small movable colony house, which will accommodato 25 to 30 hens as a laying Jlock. The advantages of the movable house are that It is more sanitary, particularly in summer, when it can be dragged about holds und cleaning is made unnecessary. Fowls are given an increased

muge ovor new territory each time the bouse is moved. Less poultry feed is needed to keep the fowls In active condition and tho bonoflts of the birds as insect destroyers may bo secured by bringing the movable

nouso into the orchard. During winter tho movable houso is loss advantageous, but by locating It on a warm south slope and providing amplo space. It Bervos this purposo fully as well tis a llxed house. A good colony house, shown in the Illustration, is used at the Wisconsin College of Agriculture poultry department fr summer chick raising, and with slight niodiilcations may be made to serve for winter use. This house Is Sxl2 feet on the floor, which Is of matched hard plue laid upon two 4x4 inch runnerB. It is sided on studs with plain mill lumber and where used only for summer colonies no lining is required. Where such a house is used in the winter, it should be well lined, so that it is perfectly air tight on all sides, except the front, whore the 2 open windows are placed. Tho houso is "M, feet high on front and slopes

' day will glvo the hens some fresh feed

to pick over since they will eat a largo number of tho green clover loavos. A good method Is to placo some straw In the poultry house and add a Mttlo clover hay regularly. Clover chaff and second gradu hay may bo used to good advantage. It is unnecessary to chop straw or other litter for lions, if It Is In modernto lengths, siuco they will soon break It up if the building Is kept dry. Uedding down hens with clover or alfalfa hay avoids the necessity of soaking chaff for feeding, and flts into the system of the average farm much better. It is important to provide suincient litter at least 8 to 12 Inches deep, in order to make the hens work to got their grains. A small amount of litter will soon be scratched over and tho hens will need more exercise. Puro Water Essential. Plenty of clean water abovo the freezing temperaturo in winter Is quite Important. A largo part of the composition of the egg Is water and tho hens nocd u regular and ample supply to do their best work. If water is placed in the poultry house while slightly warm, the necessity of making arrangements to prevent freezing will bo avoldod. Tho prime essential is

, to keep drinking vessels clean. Scald ! them frequently nnd rinse out every ! day. The drinking vessels should bo placed on a platform 12 to IS inches i abovo tho general level of the floor, ! so that llttor will not be scratched Into ! tho vessel. An ordinary No. 12 galj vanlzed Iron pall Is most practical fnr . the ordinary poultry house. It Is easy

io uauuie anu clean ana can ue carried without difficulty better than a shallow pan or one of tho patented drinking fountains.

So much Is heard of tho wheat, oats and barley grown in the prairie land.i of western Canada, and so much has

been told of the wealth to bo mada

out of tho raising of cattlo on tho succulent and rich grasses

of thoso fertile plains, that a most important product has boon al most lost sight of. Flax. Recent press reports advlso us that on one of the last boats tu clear from Fort William (at tho head of Lako Superior) for HufTalo, there woro 211,000 bushels of flax valued at $5S3,220. and on another boat leaving tho saino day there were 2SS.000 bushels valued at $720.000. Thoro Ims beon a big demand for Canadian flax this season, and the lake movement has boon vory heavy. Flax Is always o uro crop, nad gives to the fanner who is anxious for quick return after getting on his land, the chance he is looking for. There Is opportunity for thousands yet, on the froo homesteads of 100 acres, nnd many of these are available within short distance of tho lines of railway that are already built or under construction, either on the main lino or branches. Iiesldes these free grant lands there is an opportunity to purchase from railway and land companies at reasonable prices. Tho display of western Canada's grains In tho straw as well as threshed grains and grasses recently made at St. Louis was an excellent demonstration of what the country can do. It proved splendid as an Illustration of tho resources of that vast prairie country, which during the past year has again proven its ability to produce excellent yields of wheat, oats nnd barloy and flax. Not only this, but tho splendid herds of cattlo are a source of large revenue. Thoro Is a fund of Information to bo had by reading the Canadian government literature, copies of which may be had free by applying to your nearest Canadian government agent PRECAUTIONS.

Best Form of Feed Troughs. For leeding a wet mash a flat

i trough -I feet 5 Inches wide, with sides 4 Inches high 8 feet long, is ample 1 for a flock of 40 hens. This flat trough

is better than tho V-shapod, so commonly used, as It Is much enslor to clean and is not upset so rendily For feeding a dry mash, the main hopper Is about tho best arrangement ever devised. It consists of a square flat box 4 inches wide slatted on the side with perpendicular slats 2 Inches apart and has a sloping top.
