A splendid thing for the body is streti.hing. When you .first wake up in the morning, take a good, long stretch Stretch the hands as far

stretch them our the head as far as you can reach, ami at the same time
stretcli the feet downward as far a.s you can. Raise the feet and stretch upward just as high as you can, and then lower the feet and legs very slowly. When you get out of bed, raise your arms over your head, and, standing 011 tiptoe, see how near you can reach the ceiling. Then walk about the room while in this position. Stand on the right foot and stretch the ri-ht arm forward and upward as lii-h as you can, while at the same tiii f t!io left foot is raied
from the floor and stretched outward, and tin- loft hand is stretched backward and downward. This is a
fine exercise for tho whole body and is especially -.'vnl for the wait and hips, making thorn firm and strong.
Standing on the left foot this exercise can be reversed.
If you Inno heon sitting in the

Illuminating Gas. In the Philosophical Transactions of the Hoyal Society of London for 1T39 is printed a letter, written in 1G91, in which the Kev. John Claytor details a series of experiments he made in distilling coal in u retort, showing not only that he had observed the inflammable ga-es ev.olvcd, but that he had collected and stored them for some time in bladders. In 1787 Lord Dundonald made gas from coal, with which he lighted the hall of Culross abbey. In 17D2 Robert Murdoch began the experiments which resulted in the establishment of coal pas aa an illuminating agent. In 1797 he publicly showed the system ho had matured, and in 1 798, being employed in the factory of Boulton & Watt, Birmingham, he fitted up an apparatus for the manufachire of gaa in that establishment, -with which it was lighted. This was the first nso of illuminating gas except by way of experiment.

makeup of the man ability to grow, then, as long as he lives, he will seek for more business, seek to cover a bigger field. Many a business is in a rut today simply because the proprietor didn't advertise. In the first place? the man who advertises calls the attention of the public to some phase of his business of which he is proud. If it is so commonplace that it does not have a phase of which to the proud then naturally it will not do to advertise.
