Br PROF. FREDERICK STARR The Flowers of Japan. Tho thrco occasions of tho fall I nro greater favorites than Klkc Mino for the Jnpnneso aro tho mush- chrysanthemum. The flower Is used,
room parties, tho maple leaves and tho chrysanthemums. Tho mushroom Is commonly called "the king of foods," and minute distinctions aro mndo between those of different llowers. Parties for gathering mushrooms occur In overy part of tho emplro, but there aro certain districts famous for their plants; thus tho neighborhood of Kioto yields n mushroom known everywhere, and Japanese travelers at this senson do not fall, In visiting Kioto, to carry home a basketful of tho muchprized delicacy. Of all mushrooms, those which havo grown under pine trees and aro enld to have tho delicate flavor of tho pine are most prized. Tho mushroom occurs constantly in popular art. It Is commonly associated with Uzume, "the much happiness woman." Tho viewing of tho maplo leaves is a favorlto excuso for autumn picnics among these peoplo. Tho Japaneso maple trees are usually of small sizo Vlth very little leaves, deeply and narrowly cut. Tho chango In color Is gradual, from tho natural groon through brownish purple into reds, crimsons nnd brilliant orange. Whllo there aro of course maple trees everyr hero certain places aro preeminent ror tho gorgeousness of tho autumn coloring. Thus Nikko Is famous for Its bright display. At this season brilliant maplo leaves (artificial) are much In voguo as a decoration for store windows. Neither mushrooms nor maplo

leaves, however, an- to attract our at tention on this occasion. The third of the autumn delights is the chrysnn fhemura. Just now ono p?s chrysan thomum everywhere. Plants aro of ferod for salo on every street, and particularly in tho morning ono meets groat push carts filled with growing and blossoming plants. On the whole, tho highest tasto finds satisfaction in puro whites and bright yellows; thero are, however, of course, any quantity of other tints, most of which havo their admirers. Tho names given to tho different varieties are poetical and often indicate quick npporceptlon nnd Interesting association of Ideas. Flowers In which the outer coloring differs from tho Inner color of tho petalolds usunlly call up damasks to tho Japaneso mind. Personally, those which best pleaso us aro tho dark maroon-purple somotlmes verging almost to black and tho damask-sug-gostlng flowers with outer tint of golden yellow and Inner of maroon. It Is not only the larger plnnts with enormous blooms that please, but very many times tho little flowered forms covered with blossoms not an inch across aro charming. In our garden Cooksan set out two little plants which we havo watched with wonder. Ono of them Is a mass of small flowers, not an Inch across, of sunny yellow. The other plant, scarcely a foot In height, has borne many scores of rich maroon blossoms Bcarcoly three-quarters of an Inch across. Yesterday we saw tho chrysan-. themums at Narlta. Tho place Is famous for Its displays, and the Bhow was brilliant. The favorites appeared to bo flowers of Bnowy whiteness 2Y Inches across, with narrow tattered petalolds. Tho massing of tho plantB at such displays Is striking. Thousands of plants aro crowded closely together bo as to give a vory sheet of bloom. The pervading fondness for chrysan themums Is Indicated In many popular fashion. Thus few nameg for -women

of course, In decoration everywhere. Every one knows, too, that it Is tho Imperial flower, and appears not only on tho national flag, but on tbo stamps and coins as well. It Is true that the doooratlvo Is a highly conventionalized Chrysanthemum as, Indeed, the representations of flowers used in decoration generally are. But do not for a moment think that the chrysanthemum used In decoration Is Imperial. Tho uso of the Imporlal chrysanthemum Is prohibited by law. It may bo used on objects mado for tho imperial family or on objocts presented by them as tokens of apreclatlon. The Imperial chrysanthemum has 1G petalolds. If you will notice the next decorative chrysanthemum you see, you will find that It has any number of petalolds except 16; that num-. ber it must not have. Apart from the displays of fine plants In notable bloom, remarkable for their character or quality, there is a curious kind of chrysanthemum show which Is very popular. Perhaps the best known of these is Dangazaka. At Dangazaka there aro four chrysanthemum shows In competition. They occupy both sides of a street which runs steeply downhill--two on one side, two on the othor. In front of them are curious box platforms scarcely more "than a yard square, and mounted on posts which raise them to a height of three feet or more above tho ground. In each one of these and every show has several j U a hpiclor whoso noisy crlts would do crtdH to ( oney Island or a ,1'lko show. The din made by theso fellows is prodigious, as each 0110 seems to make a special appeal to each and evory passer to patronize his show. They hold out to tho possible patron a great handbill on which are represented in crude wood-cut pictures some of tho attractions to bo expected within. When lunch time comes, tho spielers do not quit their box platforms, but unconcernedly eat rice and drink toa In tho presenco of nil, stop ping between sips and mouthfuls to cry out thoir shows. Three forms of attractions are usually presented: First and most characteristic are tho flower figures; second, the trained plant figures; third, tho blooms. At these shows tho blooms really aro the tast of the three points of Interest. Tho flower figures -ire usually of the size of life. They consist of a light framowork made of an open basketwork of withes. These aro supplied with heads, hands nnd feet of modeled composition. The framowork Is closely filled and covered with moss, leaves, lichens and crysanthomum blooms. The flowers generally used aro small and chiefly of three colors purple, white nnd yellow. Tho foundation of tho clothing Is usually green or gray mosses or lichens; the embroidery" and patterns on them are in the colored flowers. These figures aro usunlly grouped In tableaux, which havo a suitable background. Tho figures themselves aro so posed and placed as to havo considerable realIsm and llfellko appearance. In most cases, nine out of ten at least, they represent somo Bceno from national history, tradition or mythology. Tho noted heroeB of the past, beautiful and famous ladles, the gods them selves aro those who hero are shown. The grouping and posturing recoil and nlcturo some striking scene In tho famous stories of the race. To every Jananeso child, each of theso groups Is an objeot lesson and Instantly re
calls a Btory with which he Is familiar. Thus tho doings of Voshltsune, tho deeds of tho 17 Konln, and tho acts of tho 800.000 gods aro favorlto subJcctu. DcBldes theso groups of flower figures at Dangozaka there are astonishing productions In tho way of training single plnnts to curious and absurd forms. This training Is done by tying Individual shoots or branches to Blonder splints. A favorlto form for such training Is a fan; but rings, bicycles, tram cars, sailing vessels (with extended sails) are not beyond the rnnge of possibility. Tho least significant of the three forms of exhibit nt Dangozaka Is tho display of blossoms. Thero aro, however, somo things of Interest. Thus, at present, thero Is a great plant covered with a sheet of bloom which Is composed, they Bay, of more than a thousand individual flowers. Thero nro many such chrysanthemum shows Just now In progress. Ono which makes a bid for a higher class of patronage is to bo seen in the great wrestling hall. This building, a new one, is claimed to bo tho largost audience hall In the whole Orient Just now It la given up to Chrysanthemums. Thero Is a great show of blooming plants for salo as one approaches. Within thero are tho usual
groups of figures. Most startling and j striking of all of theso Is a vory ef-1 fectlve piece representing tho famous passage In tho old mythology of Uzum dancing to please tho gods. Tho gods look sadly like Ainu gentry; 1 they have long and heavy beards qulto , unlike what might be expected of true . Japnnese. They are represented as I sitting In a semicircle on tho ground. The background Is a magnificent massing of green and blooming flowers, broken at tho middle by tho oponlng of the cavo In which the sun goddess has hidden herself. Several of the gods, supplied with characteristic Japanese Instruments, seem to be playing tho accompaniment to the "woman-of - aboundlng-bapplness" as sho dances. Tho god-of-the-strong-arms has seized the great stone at the entranco to the cave of the sun goddess and Is dragging it aside, revealing the goddess herself against a brilliant rising sun. After passing a series of finely executed groups, mostly traditional, although one comic piece is distinctly modern, wo como to a final performance which Is curious nnd characteristically Japanese. It represents scenes In Yoshltsume's life. In it there Is a great vessel supposed to represent a Chinese pirate junk composed of flowers. Tho hero is seen In a canoe. The vessel re volves in the apparent water to tho gif-at joy of tho crowd of spectators. Whrn It has completed its revolution It suddenly falls to pieces, whllo newactors brilliantly Illuminated with numberless Bmall electric lights of different colors como into the scene. t the same time the celling of the space above the spectators disappears t and ono seems to be standing beneath n trellis covered with pendant clusters of wistaria. This whole celling lowers over tho head of the crowd In a curious and striking way, simple ' but effective. At tho wrestling hall a very notablo competition Is taking place In chrysanthemums. Tho prize ' flowers have been carefully collared with white paper collars to separate them from their surroundings and to givo an opportunity for critical Judgment upon the eloments which have made them the wlnnora of the prizes offered. Another chrysanthemum display Is . n near Shiba park. Here tho chrysanthemums In bloom arc tho attraction. Th re is also a groat display of tho httlo dwarfed trees for which Japan is famous. Hero ono may seo ancient pine trees a little more than a foot or two In height, some of them gnarled nnd twisted in tho most fantastic fashions, Jmitatlng tho wildest freaks of nature; Uttlo maples, the dellcnte follago of which is turning; little plum treos, whoso leafless trunks and branches tell that winter comes. Here, too, aro stono gardens but stono gardens are another story. (Copyright. 1910, by W. O. Chapman ) CHARACTER SEEN IN PIPES The Activity of a Race Is Proportional to Length of Stems of Their Pipes. M. do Wattevlllo of Paris Is a col lector of pipes, and his study of the question has enabled him to Judge peoplo by their pipes. Tho pipe, he tells us, Is characteristic of tho race, while tho cigar and cigarettes nre cosmopolitan. The activity of a race is proportional to the length of tho stem of their pipes. The shorter tho pipes tho more laborious tho peoplo, and, Inversely, the longer tho pipe tho more slothful the peoplo. The moro economic tho peoplo tho shortor tho plpo Btem, and, inversely, tho moro prodigal tho race tho moro 'gluttonous it Is the bigger is tho bowl of tho pipe. His last deduction regarding tho smoking of pipes is perhaps the most unassnllablo. It Is: "Tho main point In regard to nlpes Is not to break them." TIt-Blts. Longest Railway Journey. Planning to take tho longest continuous railway Journey posslblo on tho earth, Secretary of War Dickinson haß decided, In returning from the Philippines, to use tho Trans-Sibedlan railway. He will thon be In a position, on his return, to understand how much of a factor that great railway will bo in determining tho part Russia will play In tho far east, and to what extent It will be posslblo for tho road to flguro as a military factor In shaping tho affairs of tho future In that part of Asia,
