HORTICULTURAL NOTES. Morn troos nro harmod than holped y pruning. Thii 1 n broad statomtMit. but wo bellove it is true. In planting mixed sweot puns, you can toll whether tho flower will he llRht or dark by tho color of the seed. To sot applo trees of tho standard ßorts cloaor than 30 feet is giving them less iqII and air room than they should have. Tho qulckoit fruit to give returns Is straw berrle. and it tlie st-ason. Now 1b a good tinio to set out the plants. No man should attempt to prune n tree until lie has learned what is to be accomplished by pruning, and how to do it properly. In the south, crimson clover sown in the fall nnd turned under In the Hprlng has proven to bo an excellent orchard treatment. Kvcry bright day spray forcibly any plnnts that may bo ever so slightly attacked by rod spider and any doubtful places near the heating plpos in the rose house. The spikea of Odontoglossum cltrosmum will soon bo showing In tho tips of the new growth. When this occurs give the plants a thorough soaking of water, but not before. It Is useless to put most seeds Into the ground until it is warmed up and dry enough to work up light. Corn planting time is about the average time for moat llower seeds. Where there are herbaceous plnnts in protectors look over them on mild days and remove anything of a decaying nature. From now on they muat liRve air. except during the very coldest weather. The sweet pea Is a notable exception. The earlier it can be tucked Into the ground the better. Do not wnit for fine weather, but in tho first pleasant days work up the soil as well as possible and plant the seeds. PROPER WAY TO SET TREES Interesting Experiments in England Show That Most Successful Method Is by Ramming. Some interesting experiments have ! been made at Worburn farm and other i places in England to demonstrate tho ; proper way to set trees, j According to these reports from Eng1 land the correct method 1b to make Not Rammed. Rammed. Gascoyne. a small hole, double tho roots up any old way, jam tho tree In, ram down the soil as hnrd as if one wore setting a fen co post. Tho result of these experiments show that 5D per cent, of the trees planted In this way showed In favor of the ramming, 27 per cent, showed no difference at all and 14 per cent, were against this method nnd In favor of planting in a large hole and spreading the roots out carefully. Trees that were Jammed Into the ground showed & copious development of fibrous roots. Not Rammed. Marie Louise. Tho Illustrations given herewith givo somo Idea of the action of tho roots under tho different methods. Experiments further show that the fibrous and small roots produced in the nursery beforo digging play no great part as roots during the subsequent life ot tho tree. Packing Apples. Tho Geriunn government has Issued a decree which In effect permits American apples packed In barrels In the head of which excohdar or pnpur is placed to prevent damage In shipment to enter tho country without tho payment of tho tariff rate provided. Hitherto apples so packed havo paid the increased duty applicable to "fruit doubly wrapped." The removal of the extra duty will relieve a burdensome duty on American apples. Pruning Small Fruit. The cnrrnM nnd goosoborry need pruning. This Is host dono whon tho four or five year old wood la cut out. Sometimes If there nre too many now shoots, they can bo thinned to advantage. The Codling Moth. Oct ready to fight the codling moth which causes wormy npples. In tho meantime, fruit growers should propare thomsolvos for tho campaign by ordering a flrst-clnss sprny pump and the necessary attachments.

r-OPULAR FLOWER Or WINTER Chrytanthemum, Because of Immense Sirs, Gracefulness and Long , Stem, Makes It King. T. 'I'y h n. biiei'ahd.) in.- chrysanthemum stands as tho : i.cim popular llower of early wintor, and Hith some it Is tho most popular J and best loved flower of the sonson.

us Immonao size, grncofulnoss of petal arrangement, and exceedingly long atom niuko It beyond question one of the most regal of all cut flowers. It is a flower with distinct character, and stands In a das by itself with no competitors. Coming at a season when all garden flowers havo boon killed by frost, and Just boforo roses, carnations and violets havo started to do their host under glass, it bountifully and superbly fills n gap In the cut flower season that no other llower could possibly do. November can bo said to be the month for chrysanthemums. Few blossom beforo and few after this month. They have only ono season for blooming, and when this season is over the parent plnnts are worthless Stages of Chrysanthemum except for cuttings for the propagation of new plants for the next year's blooms. Thre are early and late varieties. Just as with other plants, yet the season for blooming never expands buyond certain limits. No manner of care or forcing will make them blossom before cool woathor, and no manner of retarding will hold tho blossoms hnck till later than Christinas, provided the young plants are started at the same time in late winter or early spring. On tne other hand, they respond to rich soil nnd good treatment, but tho result is strong, long stems and tiny blossoms, rather than a gain In the time of blooming. Length of stem is ono of the groat marks In the measure of value for cut flowers as viewed by. the cut-flower-loving public of today. The longer the stem, the higher the price, other points being equal. Nor is this a mere whim of public taste, but a rational choice, since a flower with a long stem, full of sap and crude or elaborated blossom food, will last longer thau the one with a short stem or no stem nt all. Flowers with stems a foot long or more will last from one to three weeks or more in a vase of water, whilo those with very short or no stems do well to last a day or two. The chrysanthemum as grown today with a single termlnnl blossom hns the longest stem of any commercial llower that is generally sold In our country. The Illustrations shown herewith are from a photograph accompanying an nrticle on debudding. by G. II. Taylor, published In tho Garden Magazine. Copyrighted by Doubleday, Page & Co. Tho best quality of chrysanthemum blooms are generally produced by terminal buds, but crown buds give the larger flowers. Figs 4 and C crown buds; figs. 1. 2 and 10 terminal buds; figs. 5. C, 7 show methods of pinching, and when to do It. Fig 3 n terminal cluster after debudding. Figs. 9 and 10 show how debudding makes tho solitary bloom larger than whon several buds are left on the stem. Fig 8 development of Fig. 7. Care pf Cane Fruits, ninckberrles are enslly rnlsed In Illinois soils. The fall Is tho best time for planting. Set In rows about nine feet apart, three feet In row. Commence cultivation ns soon as ground Is In proper condition In tho spring. Cultlvnto deep in the early part of the season. Later practise shallow cultivation with a harrow. Dust mulch Is hotter nnd cheaper than straw. Tho latter also tends to harbor mlco nnd Insects. Hushes should ho trimmed twico a year, being cut back tho second spring to a height of 3 to 3 foot After picking Is over cut out old canes and all small and weak growths. Pruning Grapes. Each variety of grapes Is a law unto iuelf when ft comes to pruning Tho Delaware needs but little, the Ives much and tho Concord is In the middle line. Study your varieties If you wish to havo best results. Selling Fruits. Set varieties of all tho fruits suited to your soli, cllmato and iqarkot. If you proposo to havo n surpluä ask tho consumer whnt ho wants his palate must be tickled If you uxpoot to gat his money. Hotter keep tho money In your pocket than plant trees and neglect them.
