breecliisAcinz Cinnon. The breechloading cannon were among the earliest used. We find them on English nnd other ships aa early as the last quarter of the fourteenth century, and therefore much before the time of the .buccaneers. The cannon was a mere tube, bound with heavy iron rings, and was loaded by the insertion of Ute "gönne chamber," an iron pan containing the barge, which fitted into and clof ed the breech. These guns were very clumsy affairs in comparison with the modern breechloader, but the principle was tho same.
