Circuit Court Doings.
.Tudtre Bretz adjourned court
last Saturday for the January
term. There was very little business transacted, all of which has been published in this paper, The most spectacular part of the term was the Beiter trial and which very forcibly reminds us of a paragraph in R. M. Milburns history of Slavery in America which is as follows: Practically all government is a travesty and there is no certeanrty as to how it will be meeted out- Witnesses lie easily and the wealthy are able to bribe their way out of all tiouble. We
arewondprlng if there is any con nection between the above par
agraph and Mr- Milbtirn's very
able defense of his client: ana
which evoked from one of his
clerical friends the remerk "tha
he was the Strongest man at
the JasDet Bar." he also said
somethincr else which we do no
care to reproduce Judge Bretz's
instructions to tne jury aauw um he agreed with the majority o Jasuer Deonle. and yet by a tech
nicalitv he had to order his re
lease- We r( produce the judges
charge to the jury as it will bear
repeating.
npntlemen: In this case that w
have just been trying, however you
mav fool disnosed to condemn the
conduct of the defendant In this
case, under the evidence, yet there it
one point the state has failed to es tablish, one of the material allegn
tlons in the indictment, and that h
at the time he left his wife that he left her without reasonable means
of sunoort. The state has failed to
show that that was true, and It inessential and necessary that the State should show that at the time he left her, he left her without r Eonable means of support. T r denco in this case shows coiiiii.vi, ly that he left there at the time considerable property, and in the light of the statute and our decisions of the Supreme Court, In ori der to justify a verdict of guilty? the evidence would have to convince you beyond a reasonable doubt that he left her without reasonable means of support, md the State having failed to do that, It is my duty to direct you to return a verdict for the defendant. I say it matters not however much this jury may be disposed to condemn the reprehensible indecent and inhuman conduct of the defendant in leaving his wife and in leaving her in the condition the evidence shows he did leavo her, yet the State failed to skow that when he did leave her, he left her without reasonable means of support, therefore you will return a verdict for the defendant.

AlsoProsecutingat'orney Harry Carpenters address to thecourt "There Is nothing more .repulsive to mo than to bt compelled to make a motion to nolle this case against this defendant, feeling as I do that ho is guilty, but in light of this evidence and under the Instruction of the court, we are not able to show that the property loft by this defendant is not of the value testified to by Mrs. Beiter, wo can not send men Into the house of this defendant and appraise the property to ascertain Its real value, neither have we now witnesses to contradict the evidence which is now before this court, there-
lore, with the permission of the
court, we move to nolle the case."
Laugh and Smile.
Learn to laugh. A good laugh is better than medicine. Learn how to tell a story. A well told story is as welcome as a sunbeam
in a sick room. Learn to keep your own troubles to yourself. The world is too busy to care for
your ills and sorrows. Learn to
stop croaking. If you cannot see any good in the world keen the
bad to yourself, Learn to hide
your pains anq aches under
pleasant smile. No one cares to
hear whether you have the ear
ache, headache or rheumatism.
Don't cry. Tears do well enough i . . i . . .

TRICK SHOOTING.
The Way Some of tho Stage Feat Art
Accomplished.
When a chain jiion ride shot fires blindfolded at a wedding ring or a penny hold between his wife's thumb and filler av seated back to
her shoots, by means of a mirror, at
an apple upon her head or on a
fork held in her teeth, the danger
of using a bullet is obvious, isone, cf course, is needed. The explo
sion is enouca. the apple is al
ready prepared, having been cut
into pieces and stuck together with
nn adheuive substance, and a thread
with a knot at the end, pulled through it from the "winrs," so
that it flies to bits when th gun is fired, 13 "how it is done."
Generally the more dangerous a
feat appears the more carefully if all danger eniarded against. In the "William Tell" act the thread if
often tied to the assistant's foot. When, again, the ash is shot off o cigar which t the assistant is smoking a piece of wire is pushed "by his tongue through a hollow passage in the eigar, thus thrusting off the ash at the moment of firing. A favorite but simplo trick is the shooting from some distance at nn orange hold in a lady's hand. Great applause is invariably forthcoming when the bullet drops out on her cutting open the fruit. It i3 inserted by hand earlier in the evening. Another popular trick is that of snuffing out lighted candle?. Half a dozen are placed in front of a screen, in which as many small holes are bored, one against each candle wick. At the moment of firing a confederate behind tho screen sharplv blows out each candle with a pan- of bellows. In most instances where a ball or other object has- to be broken on o living person's head blank car tridge is used and the effect produced by other means. A special wig with a spring concealed in it worked by a wire under the clothe? is generally used, the confederate manipulating the spring simultaneously vryih the firing of the rifle. As the ball is of extremely thin glass, a mere touch suffices to shatter it. In these exhibitions some of the rifle "experts" invite gentlemen from the audience to testify that tho weapon is indeed loaded. The cartridge shown look3 very well, but it is a shell of thin wax blackened to resemble a leaden bullet. It would not hurt a fly. London Tit-Bits.

American. A Cincinati newspaper tells of a consociation of marriageable maidens who have assembled to gether for strength to effectively boycott any man whom they think is too slow in proposing, they do not seem to be on the warpath to lead young; men into the path that winds its way to matrimony, and they even have some regard for the man who intends to be a bachelor and says so, but they will not abid the man who dawdles along the primrose path of dalliance and never gets there. He is the chap the maidens have organized themselves to go gunning for, and as the matter now presents itself, it would appear that the maidens have declared war on the right crowd, Of course there is a chance they may at cimes crowd a good man off the track, for some men are natural.y slow, and some are diffident ind do not wish to be brash at a noment when caution and wisdom are required bdt on general orinciples men are disnosed to
