LIVE STOCK NOTES. As a horse feed, oats have few superiors. The pig's bed Is of as much Importance as his food. Hold tho young hog until ho Is "ripe" for the block. Hard thinking Is Just ns essential to Huccess na hard work. Whitewashing of tho stables Is a good preventive of deisease. It Is a poor idea to think that any one breed Is freo from dlsoase. Soil underlaid with limestone or dry snndstono makes the best sheep ground. Clover is our cheapest hog food and every fanner should plan to uso all ho can of It. In selecting a sheep pasture avoid low, damp ground, because sheep will not thrlvo on It. Whllo iho hog Is considered tho most filthy of animals, yet no kind of animal appreciates pure water more than do hogs. The colt which Is handled right and carefully trained will nevur have to bo broken, In tho senso that word is so often used. Better send the pigs to bed hungry than to send them Into a wet nest with full Btomachs. The results are tho same and the cost less. A horse gets thirsty Just as often ns you do. Drive around to tho well and give him a drink during the afternoons. He will appreciate it. Good roads are an Important factor In bringing tho town and city closer together, and facilitate the movements of stock to market. When given a chance hogs will get hnlf of their fattening out of the pasture. Hut be sure that the pasture has something in ft when you turn them in It. MODEL BABY MUTTON FACTORY Dominant Ideas In Construction of Model Barn for Sheep Were Sunshine and Ventilation. If tho proof of tho pudding Is the eating, the barn shown In tho Illustration may safely be called a model, for It has workod with the greatest satisfaction for tho past dozen years. A vory little study of the plan of the building will show that the dominant ideas In the structuro were light and ventilation, writes John n. Peelie In Farm and Home. It was planned and is used for growing winter or hothouse lambs, but serves Just as well for a feeding barn. Tho ventilation Is so perfect that it refutes tho old Idea that a sheep cannot stand confinement, for sometimes ewes have been kept in here all winter nnd have weaned their lnmbs late in the spring and their condition has boon entirely satisfactory. The building faces to the southeast and therefore gets much sunshine in the short winter days. The original dimensions were 26x52 feet, with 16Model Sheep Barn. foot posts, but when tho silo was constructed at the north corner, an 18foot addition was built on tho front to partly inclose the silo. The lower story is seven feet and the upper nine feet. Tho mow holds aL'out 30 tons of hay. A paper roof was used at first, but has been replaced by galvanized iron on the south side, ns tho hot sun nnd tho frost soon ruined the pnper. On tho north side it was less affected, and paper is quite satisfactory. The windows In front are 3x6 feet and in tho end 3x3 feet. On the bnck, Just abovo tho nail tlo, aro several doors 24x30 Inches. Tho windows In front aro screened on the lnsido, nnd when tho weather is warm tho lower sash are raised and when it is ordinary winter weather the upper sash nro lowered. It rarely gets so cold that all tho windows are closed. Ventllntlon is nlded by four hay chutes, a stairway and silngo drop. With this system of ventilation, foul

Tho drop door shown in the end of tho building Is eight feet wide nnd leads into the paddock which was constructed for the sheep to exerclso In during tho winter days, but is never used, as we have discovered that tho lnmbs do bettor if kept closo to their feed. The hay chutes connect with the rnck and ono man can feed tho shoep both silage nnd hay In a very few moments. Water is piped into tho barn from a nearby wind pump and reservoir tank, and is used just as needed.
DEVICE FOR DRESSING HOGS
Frame Is Made Similar to That Used In Making Derrick for Lifting HayEasily Constructed. An oxcollont method of constructing a hog scaling and hanging outfit is, first, put up threo polos 18 foot long, making a dorrlck similar to one eoirHog Dressing Device. times used for stacking hay. To do the scalding uso a nair of tackle blocks, sotting a barrel or Bcalding vat under the center of the poles and doing the lifting with tho tackle. A platform for scraping is of course necessary. The next step is to set up a revolving or turning pole with two crossarms, as shown In the cut. The crossarms should be mortised In and held firmly In place by bolts. The bottom oi the polo should have an iron pin driven into it, and n hole bored in tho crosspiece at tho bottom, Into which the pin fits, to hold the nole in nlaco as It ft turned. A hole is also bored in the upright pole high enough to Insert a stick of hardwood or Iron bar to turn tho pole so that the arms above swine under the derrick and out again ns tho hogs are dressed and hung thereon. Tho dressed carcass is lowered onto one of the arms from the derrick, the tackle removed, and the hog swunc around out of tho way. in this way four hogs are provided for without any lifting. If five hogs are killed, tho last ono can bo left hanging on tho tackle. HOME-MADE FORAGE CUTTER Horo is a food cutto- which anyone can make from a littlo cheap lumbar. The knife, a, Is a common broad ix For Cutting Forage. which most farmers have. Put a ban die in, ns shown, and build a frame, of 2x2 inch bard wood and inch boards. The end of the handle Is fastened to the standard at r with a piece of strap Iron. Another piece of j strap Iron, c, acts as a guard and keeps the ax close to the edgo of the box. GRAIN FIELDS FOR PASTURE Too Close Grazing and Tramping of Ground by Cattle or Sheep Injures Future Yield. Wheat and ryo sown for grain should not bo pastured by cattle or sheep, ns tho closo grazing and the tramping of tho ground will injure the future yield of both grain and straw. If the growth is rank, lambs and cows may be allowed on the field for a few days. When ground is dry, but close, pasturing must be nvoidod. The experience of practical farmers is against grazing or cutting either wheat or rye, however rank may ho the growth. Hye, sown for early spring feed, no matter how great may be the growth In the fall, should not bo pastured. The same holds true In regard to pasturing crimson clover nnd English rape. Timothy and red top meadows should not be pastured late in tho fall and during the winter months. Selecting Laying Stock. There is no doubt that certain characteristics should be looked for in a good laying hen. She should be low set nnd stand on a pair of shanks fairly wide apart. The head should bo nice and clenn cut, with a full, bright e.te. In other words, hens should show feminine character and not wrinkled and sunken fentures. Hens of the latter type should be discarded; in short, masculinity in tho hen Is a bad sign. A hen with a largo capacity for food, i. e., has n largo crop. Is usually a profitable bird to feed. Tho smaller the sack of food she takeR to roost at night the fewer eggs will she produce. Feed for Growing Hogs. Growing pigs require different feed from fattening hogs, though nearly as much of it A pig should have food that stimulates growth, bone, flesh and muscle forming foods richer in protein than in fats. Milk, shorts, peaB, oats and clover with a plight allowance of corn make a good pig or shoat ration.

A pumpkin was seen to walk across the field by Mrs. Samuel H. Hlght of Skowogan yesterdny. When she saw it she thought her eyes were deceiving her, but she soon perceived that tho pumpkin moved a little way, stopped and then turned In another direction. She watched this object for some time and told one of her neighbors. The mystery was solved, but tho two women did not dare to go nearer tho moving vegetable, but called a man who knocked the pumpkin over and found a polecat The skunk had crawled under tho pumpkin and stuck his head Into a hole in it nnd was unable to extricato himself from it and had walked off as best he could with the pumpkin on his back. Friendly Birds. Most of the birds and mammals havo the fear of man in their hearts, and are dllllcult to approach, but others show no great concern. Tho Alaskan Jays, for instance, aro devoted camp followers, "They proved useful as scavengers," says Mr. Osgood, "and cooked oatmeal seemed to attract them even more than raw meat They any time hopping about the campflre, or perched on tho tent poles and ropes. Their harsh chattering was not always pleasant, but was somewhat atoned for by their less frequent soft whistle and their pert and confident ways, so on the whole their presence was welcomed."
