A Clrcue rtoraa fn Battle. Colonel Charles Marshall, who waimflid-dc-cainp to General Eobcrt E.Qp and who went through tho battles of the war with his chief told the fallowing amusing story of his (xperu'iue with a new horse: TTis old horse had been shot from under him in the tight of the pro vious day. and he hnd taken possession of an animal that seined to Buit the work. In tho battle a fovr hours later he was riding nrross a held in which thero were numerous stumps. Suddenly the performance opened. The guns roared, and tho air was filled with smoko and noiso. Before Colonel Marshall knew what was happening the horse had his four feet on one of the stumps and was gayly dancing in a circle. In the meantime the firing was increasing, and the situation was anything but comfortable. But the horse kept on as if he were enjoying it. "It was not until afterward," said Colonel Marshall, "that I found the horse had belonged to a circus and had been trained to do this act amid the firing- of, cannon." Getting What'i Coming to Him.

"I've gone through grammar school," he said. "I can do every sum in the mental arithmetic, and I always got a hundred mark in my history and geography." "Well," responded the other boy, thrusting out his lower jaw, "I can move my ears, and you can't." Youth's Companion.

Opportune. It was Just as tho curtain was being rung up that kind hearted Mrs. Grey suddenly remembered the inquiry that she had intended to rnako about a sick neighbor. She leaned back and accosted Mrs. Bascom, who had just moved in next door to the sick friend. "Can you tell me," Bhe queried hastily, "how old Mrs. Davis is?" A "puzzled and reflective look stole over tho face of Mrs. Bascom as she turned for a whispered consultation with a third lady, directly behind her. Presently she bobbed back toward Mrs. fJrey, her forehead puckered. "I realiy am not quite certain," she reported apologetically, "but I believe she is at least scven-lY-five." llaroer's Wccklv.
