STRAIN OF RACING CAR.

It is Tremendous In a Dig Automobile Race. Julian Street, the author, is an enthualnBtir mot or In and his own racing car was used by George Robertson as a practice- ear for the Vanderbllt Cup which he afterwards won. Mr. Streot contributes an interesting article to the American Magazine, In which he duHcriboH his experiences during the week ho spent in Hohertsori's training camp on tho course prior to the race. Iu speaking of the strain that is placed on a car during such a race Mr. Street says: "Kow people realize tho strain that is placed upon a raeing car. There are many machines which would he driven across the continent and back successfully, yot could not possibly endure the racking that a road race of several hundred miles would give. If weaknesses exist they are sure to be brought out by tho furious and sustained pace. One of the weaknesses of early American cars was in the Btool of which thpy were constructed. In 1005 tho best alloy automobile steels could not be bought in the United States, but wore Imported for use in certain racers. Ordinary steel might do for ordinary work, but for racing the highest grade was none too good. In 1Ö0C. however, our steel men awoke, and made the alloys so necessary in high-grade automobile construction. . Once obtainable they wore eagerly taken by the American automobile manufacturers for use. not only in racers, but in all cars. This was an important stride In the direction of making American tars as good as any cars made In the world. Do not forget, then. Mr. Motorist, as you Iiack the luncheon hamper in your tonneau, and set out for the Vanderbllt Cup. that that same cup has helped to make your own car what it is a car (I hope) which will not only take you out, but bring you safely home again; a car with stout axles, gentle springs, a tough, yet aupple frame, and strong young gears, which find their work so asy that, instead of groaning over It, they sing! "As with the car; so with the tire. Four tubes of vogetable compound supporting a great mass of metal are bound to wear and puncture. Toughness and ease of replacement are. therefore, desirable in touring and necessities In racing. In the early days of motor racing a tire change meant a most serious delay, if not actual defeat. Replacement was accomplished by brute force, as many men working aa could be crowded around the machine. The old shoe was hacked off with knives, the new was Jammed on by all the hands that could be applied to iL Then it was pumped up. laboriously. This operation being obviously imbecile, brains were set to work. One result was the compressed air bottle for inllating tires; another the detachable rim; a third the demountable rim ready inflated tire which may be changed by i ne man in less than a minute. Likewise the steel-Btudded non-skid tire was originally a racing development. All of the devices, produced and nroved through racing, have become the heritage of the average motorist, saving his moaey, his temr-er and his time." Queen of Holland Like Other Girls. The lad,y who Is now the queen of Holland became a queen when she was quite a little girl. One day the little queen wished to speak to her mother, so she went up to the door of the room in which her mother was talking to some friends, and there she knocked very loudly. "Who's there?" asked mother. "It is the Queen of Holland," repiled the little girl, in very stately tones. Then." called the mother, "she must not come in." On hearing this the little queen altered her voice and in a very gentle tone said 'Mamma, it's your own little dnughter that loves you and would like to kiss you!" Whereupon mother, who was Just like other little girls mohers, called out: "You may come In. then." Brute. Cynic She knows his footsteps a mile off in the midst of a hundred others, sees him coming from the corner of her eye, pats her hair and smooth her dress, and jumps a foot with surprise when he asconds the piazza steph. Clinic Who? Cynic All of 'em! Life. His Title. An old darkey in Kentucky slcns himself Col. Henry Clay Jones. When askod why ho should prefix that title to his name, as ho had no right to do, he replied: "Yes, I lias, sah." "Hut you're not a Colonel." "Dat don' mean Colonel, boss; dat means colored." Wind Wheelbarrows. One the strangest sights In China is tho wind wheelbarrow. It Is drawn by a donkey, aiid when the wind is fair a sail Is set. The wheel turns in the middle of a wooden frame, sustained by iron bars. Upon tho frame are hung all kinds of utensils. The donkoy Is generally mounted by the paterfamilias, the son and heir is at the stern assisting all he can, while the mother and younger ones ride on the vehicle.

Just Like a Man. Mrs. Stylos I overheard you and your friend talking about me. Mr. Stylos Yes, dear; we were talking about you. "And you referred to something as bolng like alabaster.
