l'russic ncld poisons every living thing, plants as well as animals.

This is tho story of n man who turned his chief recreation into a in en im of livelihood. The man's natno is Jamos .McUnlee, and he halls from Uoehtwtor. N. V. n 187:1 he began to play cliockors for amusement. Today h plays checkers for his bread and butler, and does it no wpII ilmt

ho has to employ an assistant. Hut here's his own story. Jus told It nt Coney island one afternoon last week: "1 grew up In the show business and wns a crack piano player In the days when the crowd sang the chorus of Nellie Was a Ijidy.' 'Old Hlaek Joe' and 'Massa's In the Cold, Cold Ground.' Many a ballad singer who made good In 'The nine Alsatian Mountains' and After the Ball' did I play accompaniments for. but when rag time came in I was too old to master its kinks. I had to find something else to do. but I knew I'd have to stay In the show business. That had been my living for too many years to drop it In my old age. For years my one recreation had been checkers, and when I was not playing for folks to sing or dance I was licking somebody at checkers. Men came from far and near around Hochester to beat me, but they couldn't. I had not only studied out thousands of moves for myself, but I had read everything written on checkers, worked out all the dlfllcult games told about In newspapers and met every champion that came my way. "I said to my checker board: 'Here, you've got to pay back with interest the years of work I've given you.' And the wise old board just seemed to shake with glee at the idea. I took out a concession permit and went to a country fair to try my luck. I spread out a couple of boards Players who won a game from me did not have to pay: those who lost gave me 5 cents. Well. I didn't get rich that first season, but that winter I got so that I could run six boards, or rather play against six people, at a time. The next fair season that one Idea made a hit. and it was not hard to keep six players at the boards most of the time.

"Well, of course, if you make good anywhere elso you want to get to the big town; so I came to Coney Island and set up my boards in the open air. Wise ones said: 'Too tame for Coney Island.' but they were wrong. Coney likes a little of everything, and men who hadn't seen a checkerboard since they got to wandering down the Great White Way seemed right glad to see me. Farmers and out-of-town folks gonerally said it felt like homo to meet up with a checkerboard. "On a bright day I'll play from 40 to CO games an hour, and have about three of four right busy hours each afternoon. Some folks think I must get tired, but, while the game Is almost mechanical with me and I can

almost always foresee just what each player's next move will be; you never

get tired of studying people and their

temperaments. There's the young man

who wants to show his best girl what a sport he Is. even at checkers. I lick him to a finish, but I let the girl beat

mo. and that Just tickles her to death.

Then sometimes a husband and wife

will come along, and the wife will Just

sit and chuckle watching me beat her

husband, or she may get spunky and

PAT MISC 9 make him play to show what he can do. That sort of woman takes It so

seriously that you've got to let her

husband win or she'll worry him to

death about it.

"Everybody may not know that

checkers is one of the oldest games in

history and antedates chess. Egyptolo

gists have discovered traces of its be

ing a recreation G.GOO years ago, so

you see there Is nothing new, not even

a game, under the sun; only it Is a new idea for a man to make his living

It may be true that thero Is no east nor wost when two strong men meet. But the meeting of Czar and Kaiser only emphasized the points of the compass and the subdivisions of geography by national and racial lines, says Collier's. In the middle of June, nt Pitpikas. on tho Finnish coast, Nicholas and Wilhelm chatted about the future of Europe. Knowing that the Czar was planning n series of visits to President Fallleres. to King Edward, to tlw Pope and Victor Emmnnuel. and to one or more of the northwestern countries, tho Kaiser Inserted a call at tho beginning of the imperial tour. It is believed that tho German Emperor desired by his uigency to weaken the fellowship of Russia with Groat Britain and France. King Edward of England recently completed a pacifying tour, where his

And it was the old-fashioned Idea of Kings that they were immovable on a golden throne. Si-atcd like Javey, they dispensed justice from the center of rest. But today, to stay at the samo point, they sometimes have to run at tho top of their sped. A modern King Is a bit of a commercial traveler.
