An extraordinary scene took place In the Princess' Theater. Iondon, on the night of the first production of Charles Rcaile's great play, "Never Too Late to mend," Oct. 4, 1SC5. During the prison scene a large quantity of water was thrown over Miss Moore, who took the part of Josephs, the character done to death by the warders. One of the critics. Mr. Tornlln. of the Moraine Ad vertlser. rose from his seat and pub licly protested against the unnecessary cruelty. This aroused almost a riot among the audience, and the action oi the play was stopped for some consid erable time. Fuel was added to the fire by George Vlnlnc, the lessee of the theater, who was playing the part oi Tom uobinson and who made a most Imprudent speech, In which he prac tlcally Insulted every critic present with the result that the theater wai left severely alone by the press for many months. The play, however. turne! out to be a popular success and had. for those days, the phenom enal run of 140 performances. Convincing Proof. The Improper salectlon of food drives many a healthy person Into the depths of despairing illness. Indeed, most sickness comes from wrong food and just so surely as that Is the case right food will make the sun shine once more. An old veteran of Newburyport, Mass., says: "In October, I was taken sick and went to bed, losing 47 pounds In about CO days. I had doctor after doctor, food hurt me and I had to lire almost entirely on magnesia and soda. All solid food distressed me so that water would run out of my mouth In little streams. "I had terrlbJe night sweats and my doctor finally said I had consumption and must die. My good wife gave up all hope. We were at Old Orchard. Me., at that time and my wife saw Grape-Nuts In a grocery there. She bought some and persuaded mo to try It. "I had no faith In it but took It to please her. To my surprise It did not distress me as all other food had done and betoro I had taken the fifth package 1 was well on the mend. The pains left my head, my mind became clearer and I gained weight rapidly. "I went back to my work again and now after tlx weeks' use of the food I am better and stronger than ever be fore In my life. Grape-Nuts Burely saved my life and made'me a strong hearty man, 15 pounds heavier than before I was taken sick. 'Both my good wife and I are will ing; to make affidavit to the truth of this." After Many Years
S 1 o r i e 1 1 nen Urownell boarded tho train and started away for his last year at couege, ne reu liko a new man with a great and unalterable purpose dn life. Ho had Just bade his fiancee, the grave, sweet-mapnered, lovely Maria Itamsely, good bye; but he felt bo sure of her avd of himself that ho entertained no fear of anything arising that couiu alter tnoir love for each other. ir anyone had told him that nine months later ho would be kissing anomer gin farewell, he would have laughed in his informer's face at tho absurdity of such an idea. How It all happened, ho, himself, naraiy Knew. A friend had engaged rooms wun uie semi-aristocratic Bea son family, who lived conveniently near the campus. It was thebe witching daughter Alice that met him at tho door and showed him to his room. Ho liked her looks that day everybody ciiu. as tne weeks went by he was charmed by her blithe, chamlng ways. There came a time when he took her to a college function; and then followed a dance or two. There were little tete-a-tetes in the hallway and he began to wanuer into the parlor of an evening, when he was weary from his stud ies, it was like a strong tonic to leave his books and spend an evening in ncr company, listening to her singing her witty repartee and her riot ous laughter, watching the ever chanc ing expression of her handsome, dark eyes. He had told Maria of the first evening that he had spent with Alice, but ne nau soon ceased to mention her In his letters. That was after he had be gun to feel a little guilty. For trradtially, almost imperceptibly, the letters that had held such an inspiration for Ulm lost their power to please and strengthen him, and by-and-by there came at times a sneaking, half-wish that he was free from his promise to the girl at home, so that he might enjoy, with a clear conscience, the pleas ure he found In the company of the one present But he would rather have taken his own life rather than break the heart of the loving, noble, faithful Maria. He would stay true to her at all odds. But. for all that, there was a pang in the parting with Alice Benson that cast a cloud over his love for Maria and darkened the pleasure of his home cominga cloud that was not to be dispelled altogether for many years. Brownell and his wife were attending a class reunion in the old college town. Fifteen years had passed since he left the portals of the college be hind. His married life had been hanny and prosperous, but he had never quite forgotten the girl he had left In order to keep his word with his first love. How lightly the years sat upon Ma ria, he thought as he compared her to the other wives that were presented to him by the old class fellows. He half wished that they had asked him to bring the children also. But with this pride in her and his family there came a glimpse of Alice before 'their return. Suddenly she stood before him. But how changed! She had not taken on matronly beauty like the dear Maria; she had only grown old. She seemed to have shrunk Into herself; crowfeet were deeping about the corners of her mouth and eyes; the knit of her brows and the petulant droop of her mouth told plainly of a fitful temper that had taken place of the old gaiety that he had admired in her. He felt an unwonted swelling of pride as he Introduced his wife in turn. He was very attentive to her that evening, and very tender when alone again in their hotel. When he had helped her remove her wraps he sud' denly surprised her by clasping her in his arms. "Dear old girlie," he murmured, as he kissed her twice, with unusual ardor: "there is no such another woman as you in the whole world, I know." One Too Many. A street car In charge of a newlynppolnted Irish conductor had just left tne car barn for the down-town run. Before It had proceeded many blocks It was boarded by an Inspector. This official, after a glance at the register and the occupants of the car, nsked, in surplre: "Why, O'Flaherty, hows this? o bavo seven pas sengers, and tho registor shows but six fares rung up!" "Begorra. Is that so?" puzzled tho green conductor. Then Instantly a happy solution of the difficulty struck him. "Git out o' horo, wan o' yez! he shouted. "There s wan too mamo yez on this car! A Musical Feat. Jack London, tho author, was introduced one day to a musician. "I. too. am a musician in a small way,' London said. "My musical tab

"When the water struck our house my father got on a bed and floated with the stream until he was rescued." "And vou'" said the musician. "I arcrmpanttd him on the piano." Clevolanl Lta icr Pays for Offending Pride. Dr. Bodloe, former consul at Amoy, was introduced to Edward Ivy, a merchant of Raleish. N. C. the other night. Frequently Dr. Bedloe was ad dressed by some of his story telling acquaintances as "Doc." "Some years ago." related the North Carolinian, "I was advised to consult Dr. Osier, the famous Johns Hopkins pathologist. He looked me over and then prescribed a new mode of living rather than a lot of medicine. He wasn't with mo twentv minutes. "Now, down nt home, where we know the physicians, we hail thorn good naturedly as Doc. Forgetting that I was a btranger. I said to Os ier, 'Well how do w3 stand, Doc?'
