TheWomen Chums uJu f'a" sulp Soa Gull was bailing in Kara bay, a part of tho Arctic oconn lying butwoon .Russia propr and Siberia. About ftvo mlloa from tho HiiHstaii coast at aunrlso In tho morning tho lookout in tlm tiro lop a woman (wom. n on Scandinavian shins do the same work before tho mast us mon,) saw on the port quarter a black speck on tho truck of sunlight "shim, merlng on the waves. A black speck on a river usually mean nothing, but at sea always excites attention. The ookout seined a glass and brought it to bear on the object, which nnd-r the magnifying powor of ihe glas was resolved Into a boat with a person m it Tho lookout sent word to tin- cap ain who gave orders to put the visa -I off a point or two wlih a view to discovering if the lone boatman u e l.-d assistance. As the Sea Gull approached tho boat the Hgure In It was disc-own i t., ithat of a woman. She was iifu d over the ship's side In au exhausted condition, pale and emaciated, but wh- n they asked her questions she nnnui re
spond only in tho Russian language which was unintelligible to tho Scandinavians. One of the crew was a young Russian woman. Katin j
who had shipped at a Siberian port a few days before. Knowing a little Scandinavian, she was brought for
ward as an Interpreter. A close ob
server woum have noticed a sllpht start on the part of both her and the woman from the boat when thov first .saw each other, but they sufficiently restrained themselvs so that nothing unusual was noticd. Katla questioned tho stranger and reported that she
claimed tc have been aboard a Ilus slan vessel and. Incurring tho dls pleasure of the captain, had beon ma
rooned. She asked where the Sea Gull
was bound ami when told that she
would first stop at a Norwegian port
asKeu to be transported there. Since
she had no money she was required
to worn ner passage before the mast 1 1 l. . ...
.amrauy uie two uussian women
became companions. The woman who
nad been marooned. Sonla Sanier
hoff, was large and soon regained her
strength, which was considerable.
Katla. on the contrary, was delicate
and she seemed o have been pulled down by some past hardship. Both women were Intellectual looking, and their station was evidently far above
mat or tne balance of the crew. Sonla
from the time she was able to stand
watch offered to do duty also for
Katla. This she Insisted unon ami
most of the time did double work re
llevlng Katla.
The first mate, a Swede named Scanderson, became enamored of Katla
and made love to her. Katla repelled him, but he persisted. Sonla took tho girl under her protection, which lod to
hard words between the mate and
Sonla, and during the altercation
aonia ioiu mm tnat it he did not
cease annoying her friend and country
woman she would compel him to do so. This Interested the crew, who
ridiculed Scanderson. He paid no at
tention to bonlas threat, but per sisted In annoying Katla.
One day while he was so doing ho
was lelled to the deck by a blow from Sonla. When the mate got up several of the sailors were laughing at him. He attempted to bring the open palm
ci nis nand against Sonlas ear; but, leaving his own faco unguarded, he received a knock under the Jaw which
raised him off his feet and landed him
on the deck again.
A ficht between a man and a woman brought the crew together to see. The mate arose and let drive at Sonla. Ho
was not In earnest, and the fight was.
more even. tonia was at a disadvantage from her skirts, but she had the luck to knock her enemy against
the capstan, which stunned him. and
he was carried below unconscious.
That ended the mate's attentions to
Katla, and from the time of the fight
tne two women were inseparable. But Sonla had nothing to do with
any of the women of the crew except Katla. She would not occupy a bunk with the women, sleeping when she
did sleep at night on deck. She was a puzzlo to the men, and her devotion to Katla excited a good deal of curios
ity. The captain, hearing of her quar
rel with the mate, reprimanded him
and gave orders that the two Russian women should thereafter be treated with every consideration. He oven relieved Katla of her part of the duties of a seaman. Finally the Sea Gull rounded the northern extremity of Norway and, sailing down into the Atlantic ocean, put Into Bergen. When the anchor had been dropped In Sweedish waters the women went to the" cabin of the captain and made a confession. They were both escaped prisoners from the Russian political prison at Kara. Katla had been convicted of teaching the Russian peasants. Sonla was a man, Michael Vlostoff. who had got himself sent to lara for the express purpose or freelf.g Katla, which he had planned to do by bribery. Katla's escape had beon mnde at tho time arranged, but Vlostoff had been delayed. Tmy had arranged to get away from Siberia by shipping on a foreign ves
sel, which Katla has accomplished.
VlostoIT had been obliged to put out
In Kara bay In a boat, and fortune decreed that he should be picked up bv
tho vessel on which Kntin had
shipped.
The captain furnished Vlostoff with
a suit of men's clothes, and the pair
wore married before leaving the ship.
