was carried into the office of the State Treasurer and tendered by the WatersPierce Oil Company In payment of the biggest fine that "stuck" ever assessed

iu the United States. The original fine was H.C23.900. On this interest, Amounting to $1S4.&54. accumulated while the Company was appealing the case through the various courts. For the attorneys 500.4ST.75 was deducted before the money was paid to the State Treasurer. The net balance paid to the State was $1.71S.2CC30. an excess of S01.3GG.30 over the original fine. J. P. Gruit. former private secretary to H. Clay Pierce, head of the oil company, will receive $30.000 of the attorney's share of the fine. It was testimony furnished by Grult that led to the conviction of the company. The money for tho attorneys was taken out before the fine was formally paid, because after it is once paid into the State treasury it can be taken out again only by appropriation. The big fund will be taken Into consideration In making up the next tax assessment, which Governor Campbell says will be the smallest In the history

of the State. The fine assessed against the Waters-Pierce Company followed its conviction for violation of the Texas anti-trust laws. The company was ousted from Texas, then re-admitted through the efforts of Senator Hailey on an affidavit made by H. Clay Pierce, declaring It hnd no connection with the Standard Oil Company.
