Constantinople, Cable: While it looks now as if the military forces from the provinces will be persuaded not to continue their inarch on Constantinople, their (lenuuiil? that tho constitution be upheld having been granted by Parliament. th? Government seems unable to check the massacre of Christians by fanatic Moslems in Asia Minor and other parts of the empire. The latest reports are that more tliHii l.Ooi) persons have been massacred at Alexandretta and Tarsus, and that the burning of towns and slaughter of Christians are s'.iil going on. The Porte is more anxious concerning the efforts of tin massacre in Asia Minor than the Young Tuik ad

vance, and it fears a Mrittsti, irencn and Russian naval demonstration. It beliecs that Russia mens to send warships through the Dardanelles. Conlirmatlon has been received here of the killing of two American missionaries at Adana. The victims were Mr. Rogers an. I Mr. Maurer. The others connected with the missions are safe. Including Mr. Christie, who is at Tarsus. Three French warships are hurrying to Mersina, where the situation is desperate. Foreigners and many Chris tinns hao taken refuge In the consulates. The local troops and the Governor are doing their best to protect the town, but there is a great fear that it can not hold out much longer ngalnst the invasion of the Moslems, who are sweeping down in large numbers. The army which is concentrating nt Tchatalje has promised not to enter Constantinople, but to await there the fulfillment of Its demands. Two reporters who accompanied the deputation were imprisoned on their arrival at Trhatalje, but subsequently they were released and permitted to return to Constantinople. Constantinople Is now tranquil, the Hiv b.-ivtnc a normal asiiect. although

the public is exceedingly norvous and appnhenslve. The garrison appears

According to the latest news irom Adana the missionaries do not dare to leave the mission house. Adana Is still burning and it is reported that not leas than 3,000 persons are homeless at Tarsus. COSTLY CHATS BY WIRELESS With Inhabitants of Mars Is Proposed By Savant. Iloston. Mass.. Petersburg, Ind., Special: With the burning of Albert Capehart's barn Inst week, terror among tho landlords own

ing land In tho White River bottoms, near Ira. I'lko county, is increasing, and thoro is fear of bloodshed. If the depredations now being committed by alleged night riders do not cease. The trouble among the landlords and a few tenants has been brewing

for some time. Early this spring nearly all tho big land owners in tlu White River bottoms, near Ira, both In I'lko and Daviess counties, were warned that a secret committee had been appointed to see that nil lands let to renters in the White River bottom this season were to he tended so thnt tho renter would receive twothirds of tho crop and tho owner onethird. Heretofore the same land was let for three-fifths nnd two-llfths. Some persons are holding the Farmers' Co-operative nnd Educational Society responsible for the depredations, but the oillcers of that Society in Pike county disclaim all knowledge of them and volunteer their services in seeking out tho guilty porsons. That tenants are being frightened off farms Is shown by the statements of M. J. Carnahan and William Schrolurke, the first having lost six and the other thirteen tenants within the last tew months, the tenants fearing tholr lives would be In danger If they remained to put in the season's crop.

Sometime ago a proposition was made to Schrolucke by two well-known members of the Farmers' Union, asking him to ront 700 acres of his farm in

the name of tho local society, to be

tilled by its members nt the one-third

rental figure, but the offer was reject ed. Some of the land owners are try-

ing to connect the society with the

t rouble, but can get no evidence what

ever to show that their suspicions aro

correct.

Thomas Traylor, of Otwell, who

owns over one thousand acres in Pike

county, received an anonymous pack

age that had been mailed in Missouri The package contained a box of match

es and a small amount of powder, with

a note of warning to the effect that if

Traylor did not reduce his land rent

als vengeance would be meted out to

him by firo and powder. The only reason Traylor can give for receiving the package from Missouri is that friends of the Night Riders who live in Missouri, at the dictation of some persons here, mailed him the package. The Capehnrt fire is thought to be tho beginning of tho reign of fire. There is no clew to who started the fire, but the Night Riders aro being held responsible for it, whether guilty or not. The land owners are arming their tenants, and there is no doubt that the movement now hns reached a dangerous stage. People fear to travel the night-ridden district for fear they will meet with a band and come to harm. It was stated here tha'. a strtincrer

Washington, Special: Can the United States Government put a stop

to "corners" In the necessaries of life? This question is being seriously considered by officials of the administra

tion and leading members of Congress.

During the last few days hundreds of

telegrams have reached the White House, the Department of Justice and

the Department of Commerce and La bor, protesting against the bull opera

tlons of James A. Patten In the Chi

It is the general opinion of those

who r.ave been studying the subject that there Is nt present no Fed ral

statute under which operations like

patten s may be suppressed, and that

if they are to be prevented in the fu

tore special legislation by Congress

will be necessary.

The suggestion has been made, how

ever, that there is a possible remedy

In the provision of the Sherman antitrust law against conspiracies In re straint of trade. One prominent Republican member of Congress, who has received a number of telegraphic protests, said: "It would be impossible for Mr. Patten to raite the price of wheat 2S cents by his own efforts. Not only must he

have combined with shippers and producers to effect results, but he must also have used the interstate transportation lines, bonded warehouses, foreign shipments and telegraph and telephone lines of international Interstate location. "I am certain that thoro is a strong enough sentiment in Congress now to enable us to pass a law, which will prevent su'h exploitations of the nation's fx'd b.-i-ls In the future, and 1 rhaps ewn to punish the .resent expl iters for their u'-tlon.
