Thus the hare being never comatose, "became the type of periodicity, human and lunar, and as an opener became associated with the opening of the new year at Easter." Finally It came to be connected In the popular mind with the eggs broken to signify the opening of the year. "Ami there you are!" ex claims triumphantly the enthusiast!

parents hunt for these egga amid great exclteiuont. In Swnbla und Hesse children are aytually sent to the hare's nest In search of eggs. Mannhardt goes still further, saying that the liure is reputed to be n lire and soul briiiner and that children are Buppo.vi! to be procured from the nests. It would seem, however, that tho stork has largely usurped this function, which some persons will consider fortunate In. view of tho Immense number of eggs laid by the hare. Easter Facts. The observance of Easter was not instituted until some 300 yeacs after the death of Christ. The name was taken from the ancient Anglo-Saxou goddess of spring, Ostern, or Eastre, whose festlral was celebrated about the time of the Christian Easter. No celebration was arranged by the Jew
ish Christians at all. but on the 14th day of the month, Immediately following the vernal equinox, wltfcli was the day on whh h the old Jewish feast of the Passover was celebrated, the Jewish Christians celebrated the tluath of Christ, to them the paschal lamb. CJirlst having died, according to their chronology, on the date of the celebration of the Jewish Pas'soter. The celebration of the Jewish Christians was therefore for the death and not the resurrection of Christ. Tho gentile Christians, however, wer not bound by any of the Jewish traditions. Sunday ling the Lord's day to them, they therefore celebrated the resurrection" of Christ on the Sunday following the Mth day of the moon of March, the day on which Christ died. The
Jewish Christians thus celebrated the
14th day of the month, Irrespective of
the day of the week, and the gentile
Christians celebrated a Sunday, irre
spective of tlt day of the month. If
this confusion had not been resolved by the iroper ecclesiastical authorities we might have been celebrating
the day at the present time according to our Individual religions 'urcdilcc-
tlons.
The'earlr church wns torn with bit-
tcr dissensions regarding this conflict' of custom as 'to the celebration of
Easter. arIous atVetnpts were made
to fix a stable day wlrich would bo ohperved by Hie church as n whole, but
they nil failed. Finally, at tbe council ofNlee, A. D. .12.1, the question was settled once for' all. and the date now
observed throughout the Christian
world was established. Easter dnv
was then fixed as the flrst Sunday aft
er that full moon which happens on or next after March 21. If the fill! moon happens on a Sunday the following Sunday Is Eastwr.
In France th year began with
Easter Sunday until tho year l.'Gf. the
dateVof Shakespeare's birth, when
Charles IX. fixed Jan. 1 as the first
day of the year.
