By ANDREW E. EWING. ICopynrHt. 19b. by American Praia Anao clattou. Silting on a hotel porch nmong tin Swi Alps In August with my L'ikIc George, both of us gazing uf at a gla der winding Its way to the valley, I noticed a ami look In lila eye. "Poean't the vlow Invigorate you uncle V 1 asked.

"Of wimtr "Our cuutomptlble natures." I knew my uncle was a pessimist.

have been a strain on me. Now my

act seems nothing more than wiiat

might he expected from a descendant

if that half brute, half savage, called

prehistoric man."

"Hut there are redeeming traits."

"I wish 1 could see them In my

case.'

"Well, tell your story. I'm sure ym

have one to tell."

"I was in this reslou with a party of

tourists. Hub South wick, a classmate

of mine in college, had come over with

me. and we were doing these mouu tains on foot. Hob was a great climb

er. while I preferred to look at the

mountains from a distane, as we are

doing now. The party I mention Join

ed us here. Among them was a girl of nineteen" and Hob fell lu love with

her. Then he was called away to Tar

Is for awhile, nnd during his absence

I well, I cut him out with the girl."

My uncle paused and seemed to feel

again after an Interval of forty years

the degradation of his act

When George came back, as was to

be expected, there was constraint be tween him and the girl. George seem

ed to be in a mental fever; Irut, strange

to say. It showed Itself toward her nnd

not at all to me. But I found out afterward that he didn't know what I'd been up to. and I hadn't the manliness to tell hint. At any rate, he was hot for climbing nnd wanted me to go with

him. The very day after his return he wanted me to make a trip as far up the glacier as we could go between

daylight and dark. I didn't wish to1

go. and I didn't like to refuse. To stay behind with the girl I had robbed him of seemed to add to my eoutetnptlble conduct I consented to go. "We started at 4 o'clock the next morning, taking axes and n rope for making dlfllcult passages. Wc climbed over those places that from here Jook a trifle röujii up there wo found them at times Impassable proceeding on our way till noon. Then we stopped nnd ate our lunch, after which we started to piit In another hour on the upward course before returning. "Coming to n crevasse perhaps six feet across, we determined to Jump it We fastens the rope about our waists, and Bob Jumped first. The other side was steep and somewhat soft, but Bob after some stamping and cutUng wilh his ax got a foothold. Then I Jumped and struck snow. I felt myself going

backward nnd trkd' to get a hold on proJecUng Ice wlWi my ax. I failed. '

Hob saw what was coming and braced , hlirisel-f for thc shock. 1 went over." ! Another pained look came to the old, man's fare.

"The rope held. Bob was dragged a few feet nnd then got a firmer foothold, but a precarious one. There was no possibility of his pulling mo up, and If 'the strain contlntlcd I would soon drng him over. We talked together about thc prospect, he trying to
