FEEDING AT A PROFIT.

How It Was Done at Washington State Agricultural College. I edlng of beef steers on corn fodder at a profit In the Palouse country, south of Spokane, Wash., has been fully demonstrated by the Washington state college experiment farm at fullman, which sold IS steers fed as an experiment. These teert were bought at random throughout the falouse country at $25 to $30 a head. They were cut Into three lots and fed i kW slightly different methods The te'al cost of 14 steers was J.'.JO and the.- were fed eight tons of oat hay worth $7.T0 a ton, 17."C pounds of ! dder corn at $4T.O a ton; two and a iiuarter tons of wheat at $17 50 a ton; making the total cost of the steers and the feed $659.55. They were sold for $811.75, leaving a net profit of lir.i :o. The steers were fed two months, all Ulne fed alike for the first month, daring which time they were given time pounds of wheat dally. After the t'ns' month lots of two and three WOTS fed six pounds of wheat daily, while lot No. 1 continued at three pomdl ach During the nionga in hich the two lots were fed six pounds each daily, lot .two gained 490 pounds, while lot throe gained 455 pounds. Lot No. 1 only gained 270 pOSUMS during this period. The net sh gain per head of lot No. 2 over lot No i in thia period was $3 50, with hut three pounds more of wheat dally. Thin lr, an increase of more than ten cents a day. or ten cents for three pounds of wheat, which Is at the rate Ol $.' a bushel for wheat fed to stteis in this way. The experiment, explains the Draft HorSS Journal, was carried on undo, tha direction of E. E. Elliot, profes 1 r of agriculture In Washington state ii llege, but was under the great suI' vision of PrafSSSOt W. A. Link I latter, head of the department of an- ! husbandly, and W. D. Once ivlore "Perpetual Motion." David I'nlapon. a full-blooded native of the norther territory, Australia, who combines a genius for mathematics with a passion for music, claims to have Invented a machine which will secure perpetual motion. He Is now in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, seeking the means of testing the feasibility of his mechanism. He explains that the forces which he proposes to use are gravitation and momentum and he had to come to Adelaide to seek the assistance of the aborinlnes department In procuring four beveled wheels, a spindle, a tube and so on. He is confident that when he gets these requisites he can put together a machine which will bring perpetual motion appreciably nearer. Jack and the Apple. It was during an arithmetic class In a country school that Juke Hoggs was called upon to solve a problem. 'Now, Jake," began the teacher, "if you have two apples and your little brother took one how many would you have left?" "I'd jutt like to see him try taking one." said Jake, shaking his flat. "Well," tald the teacher, "we'll put It this way. Suppose you gave him one." "Yes; but 1 wouldn't do it," said Jaks Must supposing you did, what would remain?" said the weary teacher. "A big fool, that's wbat," replied Jake. Judge.

Remarkable Incident That Diatorbed Solemnity of Funeral. . tead of the accustomed quiet which prevaila at the burial of the dead, great excitement and fear attended the burial the other day of Michael Sereno, a prominent merchant of Westport, when by the collapsing of a grave the coffin and several persons attending the services were hurled into a small pit. The final prayer had been said by the preacher, and the assistant to the undertaker stepped to the foot of the coffin to arrange the rope for letting the coffin into the grave. At that moment one of the pallbearers accidentally kicked out the crosspiece that supported the coffin. The coffin quickly descended Into the grave, the body going feet first. The assistant hastened Its descent by tumbling on It. Several persons rushed to the edge of the grave, causing the soli to yield, and In a few seconds five persons were lying In the pit half covered wtjth dirt They were pulled out, the coffin was dug out and laid flat, and after the grave had been redug the burial was completed. Good for Flshermen't "Bait." The remarkable heat Insulating effect of a vacuum Is strikinnly brought out in the claims made for a new sportsman's bottle. The vessel has double walls, being really one bottle within another, with a sealed up Intervening space from which the air has been withdrawn. It is asserted that liquids in this bottle can be kept hot 48 hours In the coldest weather, and that inced beverages will retain their delicious coolness for weeks In the hottest summer.

Hundreds of imitation brands are on sale that look like Schnapps tobacco. The outside of the imitation plugs of tobacco is flue cured the same as Schnapps, but the inside is filled with cheap, flimsy, heavily sweetened air cured tobacco. One chew of Schnapps will satisfy tobacco hunger longer than two chews of such tobacco, m The color, size and shape of the tags, plugs and packages of certain imitation brands of tobacco have been made so much like Schnapps that they have often been accepted by buyers under the belief that they were getting Schnapps. Sufficient proof has been secured to establish the fact that certain brands are infringements and in violation of the trade mark laws, yet the tratle will continue to be imposed upon by these infringers until the suit

already entered and now pending to protect Scknapps is decided. A great many of these imitations arc claimed to be "just as good" as Schnapps, but there is only one genuine Schnapps. Be sure the letters on the tag, and stamped on the plug under the tag spell S-C-I I-N-A-P-P-S and then you have it the most wholesome tobacco produced, with just enough sweetening to preserve the mild, juicy, stimulating quality of the leaf tobacco. Expert tests prove that this flue cured tobacco, grown in the famous Piedmont region, requires and takes less sweetening than any other and has a wholesome, stimulating, satisfying effect on chewers. If the tobacco you are chewing don't satisfy you more than the mere habit of expectorating, stop fooling yourself and chew Schnapps tobacco.
