FAILURE8 DUE TO POOR FOUNDATIONS, SAY EXPERTS. Experiments In Mar.y Cities Belnj Watched with Great InterestPrecautions Urrjsd Against Decay. Washington - I . .s !te the unfavorable experience of many ettlen, the bureau of lorestiy of the Kovernotent uiaintalUM that pavliiK blocks of wood make a very satisfactory and eooancaieaj treet if adequate loeadatinns ar laid ami it proper precautions a oUnel de ay are taken. The BOVernment forest experts Bay that the failures of the past have occurred! because round cedar blocks were used, without precautions aRalnst de
cay and without a sufficiently foundation.
Tin- fore.-try bureau is now cm dmting an experiment which will go far toward decidln which woods are Best. The proRrePK of the experiment can be profitably waiched by all ciiies In which street paving with wood is considered An experimental pavement has Just been laid in Minneapolis as a cooperative undertaking between the city government and the fo.est service, Different woods were used and ail wi re treated with creosote A publication of the bureau of forestry says of the experiment; "Tlie woods used we re lonpleaf pine. Norway pine, tamarack, white birch, western larch and Washington fir. All blocks were laid with tho irrain vertical, and were four inches in depth, four Inches wide, and from four to ten inches lonR These blocks were Impregnated with creosote and laid upon a foundation of Portland cement concrete. Successive sections of the pavement were laid in different woodn. Also the angles of the c ourses were varied, one betaf at riRht angles to the traffic, another at 45 degrees, and a third between the two. or fi7' degrees. "This experimental pavement was laid on a streit whuh carries the heaviest traffic of the city, so that comp ara'ive results ran be obtained in as short a time as possible. Traffic recordl will be made twje a month, on different days of the week, and from these record! an accurate knowlBdg of traffic conditions may be obtaiaedL This Investigation should furnish definite information on the following jiolnts: Th- suitability of the various woods, the relative value of heartwood and sapwood. the best dimensions for the blocks, and the most serviceable angle for the courses. " The government experts are posl tlve In their belief that wood pavements have decided advantages. They say: IP ent use of rectangular wooden Mocks for street pavements has given excellent results. Many engineers believe that these blinks, when pmp erly creoaotod and laid on a concrete foundation, make a pavement which poeseaees high excellence in a great' er number of essential qualities than any other now in nee Among these qualities are great smoothness, low traction resistance, minimum noise, am: considering its sm oothness, comparativep little sUpperincSB, Slije pctiness has sometime;; proved obfeci i' nable, but is not greater Pot wood than for BheeM asphalt, all temperature conditions considerod; and wood is much b ss variable In this particular than is asphalt. It is prob able that no ther pavement with equally slight trait ion resistance will be found less slippery. Wood payment is also eas to clean and to maintain and when well laid Rives promise of proving more durable than any other except one constructed of the harden granite Two main causes have militated against a wi !er adoption of the creo soted block pavement One has been the prejudice which was engende;. I by the former experience with wood; the other Is the rise in price of long leaf or (ieorgia pine, which is the wood now principally used. The forest service is making investigations to find out what woods are most suit able for use in paving, and whether less expensive woods COM not be used to supplement the QeOTgla pine. The investigations have been upon three lines to lean the present situation, to make lent! "f the suitabil tty of VationB wo,,P. and tO lav experimental pavements and note their wear under actual traffic conditions.''

The Laxative of
Known QyAUT)
There are two elates of rrmfUm thoe of known qnility and which are permanently beneficial in effect, actiiag pently, in harmony with nature, when nature needs assistance; ami another class, composed of preparation! of link noun, umertain and inferior character, aciing' temporarily, but it jtiriously. as a result of forcing the natural functions iiniic-csarily. One of the niest exceptional of the remedies of known quality and CTetUenjCd is the ever pleasant Bftn of Kic-'. iuwiu fact u red by ths California
Fig yrup Co., which represents the acthe prim iphsi of plants, known to act most beneficially, in a plea-ant cM-up. in which the wholesome Califotnian blue ligs are ua-il to coin tribute their ri h, yet delicate, fniity flavor. It is the remedy
I of all remedies to sweeten anil refresh and cleanse the system gently and naturally, ami to n i -t one in overcoming const!pation and the many ills resulting therefrom. Its active principles and quality are known to physi-ians generally, and the remedy has therefore met with their approval, as w. II a- with the favor of many millions of well informed persons who know of their own personal knowledge and from actual irfnrrt gej that it is a most excellent laxative remedy. We do not claim that it will cure all manner of ills, but recommend it for what it really represents, a laxative remedy f known quality and excellence, containing nothing of an objectionable or injurious character.
There are two classes of purchasers; those who are informed as to the quality of what th y buy and the reasons for the excellence of articles of exceptional niei it, und who do not lark coiimire to go
elsewhere when a dealer offers an imitation of any well known article; but, tinb lllH.ll Ij. there are some people wlto do not know, and who allow themselves to he imposed upon. They cauuot expect its beneficial effects if they do not get the genuine remedy. To tlie credit of the drutrirists of the I nited Mate, t,p jt said that nearly all of them value their reputation for professional integrity and the good will of their customers too highly to oiler imitations of the
